Truism
As a previous poster noted in this age of entitlement individuals need to be reminded that there is such a thing as private property. The farm I grew up on had 65 acres of timber, many people need to be constantly reminded that this was private property and that the entire contents, apples, pears, deer, squirrels, rabbits, partridge, blue berries, raspberries all belonged to my family. So, if the mere mention of 'asking permission' to collect on property that is not owned upsets you, it is time for a paradigm shift.
I would offer you this sage bit of advise: As down life's road you go, keep your eye upon the donut, and not upon the hole. This was from a Burma Shave Sign I saw about 1955. Semper fi mate. jg |

fredl,
it's good to see you back. i was wondering what happened to you since i took a couple months off from bonsaitalk this last fall (i was really burned out on my trees and having to move back to the states). ive always enjoyed your posts, and i like what you say about exploring answers. ive had similar dicussions with my past students. in japan, there is no such thing as black and white when one faces a problem or some sort of moral dilemma. in japan, everything is sort of a "grey". i look at it this way, if everything is grey, it gets kind of hard to see things in front of my face. if everything is black and white, then there is no room for individuality because everyone else is the same. ive said it before, perhaps a more rounded way should be used by more people. but then, one's paradigm/path/road is one's own and nobody else can choose that for the individual. sometimes, having patience is really hard, and perhaps, it's good to take breathers now and then. i look forward to your discussion threads (i remember the discussion about whether or not our bonsai feel pain, and i really enjoyed it), and i look forward to learning what i can from you and everyone else. jeff |

Glad to hear you feeling better Fred.
However, I'm mystified as to why you chose to come back and in the manner of your return. What are you trying to accomplish other than to antagonize others and justify your temper tantrum? This antagonistic approach is what you seem to loathe in others, yet you don't hesitate to impose the same approach on others. What good could possibly come from the following statement?: "I have always found these comments tiresome truisms that any fool understands and certainly not the immortal pearls of wisdom that those who offer them seem to wish to endow them with. There are several other endlessly repeated comments in the same catagory, such as the solemnly stated observation that you shouldn't collect trees on someone else's property without their permission. Now, I asked myself when I felt my familiar irritation with these comments, why on Earth would an otherwise apparently intelligent person make such inane and uninteresting commets? And, really for the first time, asked myself this in a genuine effort to understand it." |

I have to admit I too was mystified by the initial posting. It struck me as though you were saying, Fred, that any definitive statement, such as saying that one needs to ask permission before collecting, was not good, and you were only going to talk to those who saw life completely in shades of gray. I tend to see things in shades of gray rather than black and white, but with some things, it's simply black and white. Asking for permission to collect is a courtesy to the landowner. Plain and simple. It's also the best way to avoid being charged with trespassing that I know of. Craig Cowing |

Welcome back Mr. Fred...I am so glad your medical situation has improved...I enjoyed reading your post, although the word 'paradigm' is certainly not one I use on a regular basis, nor am I sure I fully understand its' meaning or value...
I too, see the different 'like-minded' groups of members on the forum, although, I would probably break them into more than two groups...I think your analysis of the situation is pretty much spot on...I also think this is very normal in any given group of individuals with differing backgrounds... You have mentioned before, and I agree, an online forum is not really a good means of discussion of ideas...Far to much time lapses between thoughts, and often things are misinterpreted...People tend to ignore comments like "the importance of providing beginners with sound advice (mine) and the potential harm that giving bad advice (yours) may do" and move right on to comments like "the solemnly stated observation that you shouldn't collect trees on someone else's property without their permission"...Things are just too easily taken out of context for the sole sake of argument... There are people who obviously try very hard to impress others with their vast knowledge, and there are people who are knowledgeable...We certainly have both types in the membership of this forum community...This will always be, and perhaps that is best…We learn much more that way, if we desire to learn… Glad to have you back, and looking forward to reading more of your posts and thought provoking threads... Regards Behr ![]() |

heyWill; What is 'Death Mute'?? Isn't that a garage band from Hamtramck ? heyMikePage; I'll have you know that my avatar pic is a current photo...I take a lot of youth hormones. Also, I heard you couldn't post any baby pics because photography hadn't even been invented when you were a kid!!! ZZZing |
