Walter's explanation

Makes perfect sense and I applaud his pleasant responses to Gonzo's remarks.

Gonzo,

If it is the price of the tree's that concerns you, then don't sign up for the workshop. I would pay the price of the workshop and my travel expenses just to spend the day with Walter and Jim to learn as much as I could possibly learn from them both. I thought that was the purpose for workshops. I have spent time with Jim and have come away enlightened... very intelligent but humble man, and doesn't mind answering any questions regardless of the skill level that the person asking may pocess... and Walter seems to be the same.
Granted, I've only been into bonsai for 3 years, but I know I will never stop learning, nor do I wish too.
It seems as though you have alterior motives?? Just my opinion.
Thank you Walter for being a gentleman here... hope I can make one of the workshops.

Cheers,

Brian

'gentleman'?

Oh well, gonzo apparently is or was angry and he wanted us to know. That's OK, This is the net. In person it would have been much easier. I am used to such things. Never mind, we will have fun at the workshop and learn.

Wasting money because of lack or information about prices? I think the whole workshop is about saving money by not killing or ruining trees. Some of these trees cost several grand or a bit more even. Now I think folks want to know beforehand whether they can handle such a beast in general. Some will come out of the workshop and even plan to purchase a treee. Some may well decide to wait and gain more experience. Too many folks have spent considerable money on such collected material in the past and lost everything. The workshop is there to prevent this, or try to at least.
And most stand in front of these trees which are called 'world class' and have this strange feeling that they are impressive, but one does not quite know what the bonsai will look like. The workshop is also about this issue.
BTW, one can bring own trees to get advice for them as part of the workshop.

Gonzo, I am so grateful that you are giving me this opportunity to expand.

Now I'm going to really try and make the workshop... I must of had you all wrong Walter. Sounds like you might fit in with my bonsai crowd... lol. Do you prefer IPA's, Porters, or Stouts?

Thanks again!

Cheers,

Brian

Sounds great!

Sounds like a great oppertunity. I've been to, oh... say about 6 or so of Jim's workshops at Nature's Way. Its a wonderful way to spend the day, especially with what looks like some amazing quality material.

While I'm very interested, I think I'd like to go a year or so without killing anything. Boy would I feel horrible putting one of those trees to death.

Hmm... I have spent big money on bar tabs before. Say... do update when you are able to get a better price estimate.

For what it's worth...

I collected a large buttonwood recently and would have preferred to lug it to the workshop by actually driving it up there. It is very similar to a very old juniper Walter responded to and eventually helped out with in another thread. This buttonwood was evidently blown over in a hurricane some years ago and the driftwood is amazing. The roots however, are very one-sided (also like the old juniper) it was growing in coral rock making it a difficult extraction for both of us. IMO it is probably too early for the (now) repairing roots to start reworking, repotting, or traveling. For the moment, the greenhouse will do it the most good.

The timing of the collection (or the workshop) therefore, would not allow me to get the most out of it since this tree is the best candidate I have to get the the full benefit of Walter's considerable experince. Unlike other more definable trees I have, the scope of the work needed on this possibly world class one is/was my issue.

In my estimation, what I am left with at the moment is the purchase of one of the trees offered instead at an unknown price. I cannot see doing a workshop with these guys without then being able to carry out (put into practice) the actual work on the tree in the years to come. Maybe this is my problem as evidently no one else feels the same way.

In the end, the price may or may not concern me. I have no way of knowing WITHOUT MAKING THE INVESTMENT FIRST! If I go I could end up with nothing or I could spend...WHAT?

Cheers,

Walter,

Apologies if you thought I was angry. While I would not personally choose to conduct business in this manner, making you think I was angry was never my intent.

Again, good luck with the workshop.

Walter,
I hope that you will be able to get lots of pictures and post them, this sounds to be a great time. Having bought a number of these trees over the years (not from Jim but from the harvesters) I strongly support the concept of holding a year or two to ensure stability. John
