Very Large Trident Maple
I wanted to share this photo with those who have never seen it. That is David DeGroot in the photograph.
When your back feels a little sore after repotting some of those larger bonsai you may not feel as sorry for yourself! That tree is one bad boy. ![]() ![]()

Re: Very Large Trident Maple
Thanks Gary,
This is the "Domoto Trident." I think it was purchased at the World's Fair around 1920. Seems like it's coming along very nicely. I would love to be able to use this photo on a web page I started to put together featuring some of the Collection trees. It does a great job of showing the scale. Regards, Matt

Re: Very Large Trident Maple
Matt,
You're welcome. I got that photo quite a while ago. I don't know if it's copyrighted or not. It's my assumption that it may be in the Northwest collection in Washington State. It's a pretty obscure photo and I agree with you, it does show scale very well. Use it if you like. I don't think there's a copyright on it. I may be wrong though.

I can give you a little bit more history.
The tree is still at the Pacific Rim collection in Seattle, where it is pictured in the photo above. It was not intended to be so large, but during World War II, its Japanese-American owner was imprisoned in one of the US internment camps and during this time the tree's roots escaped its pot, growing into the soil. The tree grew beyond what is typically considered an acceptable size for bonsai during this period. Best regards, Old Mister Crow

I wonder what a pot like that would cost. You'ld probably have to mortgage the house!
