Some Trees Form The Midwest Bonsai Show In Chicago

I thought I'd share a few of my favorite trees that I saw at the Midwest Bonsai Society's Bonsai show that was held at the Chicago Botanical Gardens August 15th,16th,and17th, 2002.
Last weekend. There were many nice trees but I've only scanned a few of the winners and a few favorites of mine.

Here's "The Best of Show", a nice big Azalea.

This Dwarf Japanese Maple by Bill Valvanis was one of my favorites. I believe it is a Kiyohime (someone correct me if I'm wrong! It has produced a lot of cuttings over the years. It won the Gold Cup for best in the Professional catagory. I've always loved this tree!

I thought the trunk of this Korean Hornbeam by Brussel Martin was facinating.

This Japanese Yew won a ribbon. It was shown by Sara Rayner the great bonsai pot maker in Minnesota. She toldme it was dug out of a foundation planting. Bill valvanis told me he was there when Kimura styled it not long ago. When I saw it I though it had Kimura witten all over it.

This tree was my favorite of the show. It's a large Trident Maple.
Bill Valvanis just donated this tree to the Chicago Botanical Gardens collection.
Bill got his start at the Midwest Bonsai Society at the age of 12 when he would attend meetings with his father. His mother was at the show and I got the rest of the story from her.

This tree is about 3' tall or maybe a little larger. The trunk is about 6"-7" maybe a little more. The picture doesn't do it justice. You really need to stand in front of this tree to get the full affect of it. A very powerful yet peaceful tree. I didn't want to leave it! It was developed from a 12 foot tree that was chopped and all the brances removed and regrown. I forgot to ask just how long it took.....
Next year maybe I'll remember.

Trees from the Midwest

GaryS:
Thanks, excellent photos and comentairy. If we would all learn to do this, the forum could probably attend shows in every country and at least in every state in the US.
I am going to try to attend a show this weekend in Santa Rosa Ca. I will take my camera and try to bring some of the show back with me.

Well done!

ripsgreentree,
Thanks. I agree with you 100%.
I think the shows are one of the best places to see Bonsai at their best because they are groomed etc. It makes it agreat place to learn and if we can share this through photos we can see bonsai that we might never get to see. I wish I had a digital camera!
It sure would make the operation of getting the pictures up here easier. Jeez.

I'll post some more of the other trees from the MBS when I get them scanned.

Wow! Thanks for the pics. Your favorite tree I thought was the best of those. What kind of maple is this tree?
