Re: Southern Cal. Nursery Tour

In the next set of pictures you can see some bonsai with little green containers hanging on them. Roy replaces all the foliage on all his California Junipers. He does not like to work with the coarse California foliage, so he replaces it by grafting. Roy uses Shimpaku Juniper cuttings that are about 2-3 years old. The cuttings are approach grafted in spring, and separated the following fall.

This poor little juniper is covered with shimpaku cuttings being grafted on.

Re: Southern Cal. Nursery Tour

These are what the fruits of Roy's labor look like. These trees are in antique Chinese pots that are priceless by themselves. Add a tree like this, and it makes a package that not too many people could afford. I wish you could see these trees in person, as the photos do not show the canopies off to their full glory.

SUMMARY

Well, that about wraps up my Southern California Bonsai Nursery tour. It was the tour of a lifetime, and I can only imagine what a tour of Japan would be like. I have not been back to some of these nurseries for over 15 years, and it was good to see some old friends and find out how things have changed.

Best regards, Bonsaial Al Keppler

Re: Southern Cal. Nursery Tour

Al, Thank you for the Tour. And may I say WOW. How long did your tour take? How long were you able to spend at each place? How many new trees did you obtain, or wish you had?

Living in the North East, this is something to see. We have some wonderful nurseries but not so many so near each other. Your climate also shows in the stock available.

Thanks again for letting me come on your tour.

Al, can you recommend a nursery in Orange County?

This thread looks like a dream I have...

Yamaguchi Bonsai Nursery

I went to this shop this week and I didn't find any interesting trees.
The trees I saw were not very nice but very expensive !

The only interesting tree I saw there is the huge chorisia speciosa in the backyard. It was planted as a seedling by Mr Yamaguchi in the 50's
