Re: Southern Cal. Nursery Tour

In the last pair of pics, the top foto show a tree that George Yamaguchi calls, "Thunder." This is the way that the tree looked in 1980. George is very ill right now, and I'm sure the tree has not been worked on in a few years.

Re: Southern Cal. Nursery Tour

Well, you know me. In the bottom two pictures, I found myself snooping in the "Employee Only" section of the nursery. Why do they have these? This is where all the good stuff is, and of course, it's never for sale!

Re: Southern Cal. Nursery Tour

Way up the road we come to:
Kimura Bonsai Nursery 17230 Roscoe Blvd., Northridge, CA. 91325 818-343-4090

This is a fairly new nursery, but it has alot of stock. Owned by Robert Pressler, he teaches as does Ted Matson. The nursery is preety large and there is room to walk, but there are a lot of plants here. He does have some of those "no admittance" type areas, but most of that stock is for classes or workshops, and thats OK by me.

Re: Southern Cal. Nursery Tour

Nice tables full of trees. He also has his tables built a little higher to put the trees more at eye level.

Great photos Al it looks like you had fun. This gives me something to shoot for, I really like the areas under shade cloth. I am hoping to have something like this soon.

Re: Southern Cal. Nursery Tour

This is some of the stuff not for sale. These are prostrata junipers, about 3" at the base. They are probably for a workshop at a major show or something.

Re: Southern Cal. Nursery Tour

Last on our tour, but certainly not least is:

Fuji Bonsai Nursery
13170 Glenoaks Blvd.
Sylmar, CA. 91342
Tel: 818-362-5476
Proprietor: Roy Nagatoshi

If there was ever the ultimate nursery, this is it. One of the pldest nurseries in So. Cal. Started by his father, Shigeru Nagatoshi, and carried on by his son, Roy Nagatoshi.

Roy has done TV and Movie work with his trees. If you seen any of the [i:6184f0318c]Karate Kid[/i:6184f0318c] movies, then you seen work done by Roy. Roy will also have some bonsai in a future movie, [i:6184f0318c]The Incredible Hulk.[/i:6184f0318c]

The nursery is at Roy's home, and it is very nicly done for a home operation. The nursery is split between front yard and backyard, with most of the canned stock on the side of the driveway. Thats Roy, in the picture.

The chain link area in the bottom pic is where the dog is. Let me tell you this is one mean little son-of-a-gun! Just to look at the pots nearby this guy makes you think he's going to eat right through the fence. I think its a Shepard mix but boy he's got long teth, and a lot of them.!
