Thumbs up Schley's Bonsai Beginners Workshop

Just wanted to give Jason Scheley and his bonsai nursery two thumbs up! To me this was a very rewarding learning experience and for sure an event I will remember.

I drove 100 miles to get to Scheley's Bonsai in Daytona, Florida, but in my mind, every mile and every minute I spent there was worth it. I met Jason (Daytona) through RedPine who suggested I should visit him and check his nursery out; thanks RedPine.

The beginners class included all the tools needed to get started with bonsai (which you get to take home) a starter tree (which my girlfriend and I upgraded), a ceramic unglazed pot, soil, all the wire you can smuggle on your tree, and of course Jason's lessons and guidance for a whole day. The show even included Jason trapping a not-so-friendly raccoon. On top of everything you get coffee, donuts, pizza. I am not going to mention prize, but it is the best bang for the buck I've ever got when it comes to bonsai. You can check prizes in Jason's upcoming events:

During this class I worked on a Parsoni Juniper, and my girlfriend worked (style only) on a Black Olive.

I signed up for next month's special event which will include a visiting master, a 21" white marble slab, rocks, and the Chinese elms needed to build a Penjing.

Thanks for the kind words! I had fun as well , even though it was the only day that was freezing cold of 50 compared to the rest of the week at 80 degrees! ANd also the fact that the race was on that day so folks rescheduled for next month . I really think you should show that black olive with the front shown. that was a very nice tree! Hope you had fun and i know we'll have fun at the Penjing class ! we got turtle back stones coming in from china and got a bit of interesting material that should make for an insanely fun time.

Black Olive February 2006

Yes! Here is the black olive my gf worked on; I had to take a better picture; and this is not as good picture either. It had two sucker branches about 5' that we removed. Also, this is not precisely the front, but the best angle that I could take a picture of because the 7 gallon nursery pot gets in the way. The angle also reduces the taper effect. Very nice material.

100 miles is not that long. I drive 133 miles almost avery week to college.
I know is not confortable been in a car for 2 hours.
Cramps in legs, backache.
Anyway, I hate the way to college so I prefered to stay a couple of weeks before.

Nice, love the workshop.

Repotting: Black olive (bucida spinosa)

This black olive from Schley's nursery; it was in a 7 gallon nursery pot, and we got ready to put it in a pot about 1/2 the size, and reduce the roots just a bit. But, when we removed it from the pot noticed that all except the superficial roots were fine roots, and we repotted it into a bonsai pot that we bought from Schley's that same day instead. This was done with minimum root reduction (no more than 10% off - leaving 90% ), and that is why we decided to be raised like this. Actually, I like the way it looks, and it was of course safer.

The darker zone on the soil is some kyoto moss spores with some soil mix that should come to green in a couple of weeks.

The tree is very healthy, with lots of new growth; only a branch died that my gf had broken while in the class. Really happy with the way this is turning out; as per our teacher's directions, there it still more work to do on it, but is should be less stress than any done so far.
