Another Day in Paradise

My wife and I went to the Santa Cruz area of California sat. Spent some time with the moderator of the forum Matt Chroust. Met his wife, and he showed me aroud the grounds. A beautifull collection of trees to say the least. I was stunned at the diversity of the stock Matt is working with. He runs the gammet from "acer" to "zelkova".

BTW, Matt is the good looking one on the left!

A view of the valley at the top of the hill near Matt's home. Great view with a little fog thrown in.

We drove the back roads to Big Basin State Park, the oldest state park in Calif. The park is dedicated to preserving the coastal redwood. There are some big trees here too.

During a large fire, a med. size tree may be engulfed in flames. During the intense heat, cones pop, seeds are scattered, and the ash around the tree is thick enough to support the seeds. During these times a group of tree is formed in the circle around the mother tree. The original tree rots out, and all that is left is the "circle of friends".

Near the visitor center there is a huge slab of redwood there. It has been sanded to show the rings with minute clarity. Important dates in history are plotted on the slab.

Tree started around 544. Makes the tree 1,458 years old. Now that is one heck of a July Birthday.

We went on to play in Santa Cruz. We had dinner on Fisherman's Wharf. This is the view of the Boardwalk, and the Big Dipper, the oldest surviving wooden rollar coaster in Cal. I think they filmed some movie's on that coaster, but I can't remember which ones.

We went on to the Begonia Gardens. This is a fabulous place, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Santa Cruz/ Capitola area.

These are tuberous begonias, and not the wax fiberous type that will grow in the heat. I have bought many, only to have them fold up when it gets about 104 degrees.

This is a close up of a 5" blossom!

Hope you enjoyed my day, Bonsaial
