I'd like to thank my wife and children for their patience. And for buying me a little present. It's a Korean Hornbeam; my first. Chosen from a group of 50 similar priced items. This one was EUR 110.

Nice hornbeam! You'll have to keep us updated on the progress of that lovely gift.

Now, will someone please tell me why there isn't a Lodders near me?

(Just kidding, I already know all the riffs about how Americans are unwilling to support bonsai businesses ...)

In total there were 6 greenhouses - each at a different temp and humidity.

I didn't take photos in all of them because, well, when you've just seen 200,000 trees, suddenly you loose the urge.

I shoud have taken photos of the pots but forgot because I was searching for plastic training pots. They literally have a whole WAREHOUSE of pots. The pot room is bigger than 95% of bonsai shops. They have pots that take two full grown men to lift.

All in all a very enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.

If anyone would like to visit they are just 40km (25miles) south of Amsterdam, near Utrecht in the village of Harmelen.

Poots

Thank you - it really IS a nice one - and very reasonably priced too I thought. I never indicated how big it is so I just went outside and took down the vitals:
Height : 30cm (12inches)
Trunk circumference: 20cm (8inches).

I suspect that it'll be getting repotted out of that tough plastic thing it's in now. It appears to be potted in pure sharp sand covered in a layer of granite grit. Should have bought a new pot for it while I was there...damn. Would have been pushing my luck I think.

There's a good reason it's here in Holland - we have the worlds largest flower and plant auctions (which sells 20 million flowers and plants every day...) and it's situated very close to Europe's largest tree and shrub nurserys located just a few kilometers away in Boskoop.

I was chatting with the owner and he said they have busses full of bonsai enthusiasts travelling to him from all over Europe; it's only 1500km to Italy! (900 miles)

Jerry

I think this is a valid reason to visit amsterdam. I've done a bit of searching and have found return flights for as little as £12.50. I'm not sure what they'll let me take home to britain so i think i'm off to do some research.

Thanks Jerry, that is simply amazing. I don't think my little brain can comprehend how big that place must be! lol

Id love to go over there but it would be difficult i think to bring stuff back on the plane, ferry is the best option but seems expensive from what i have looked at. Going to belgium to Danny Use' nursery is a bit more realistic on the ferry + a very nice journey. To be honest its probably worth just saving up for the Ginkgo Awards 2007 and going over then for the full weekend.
