Philadelphia Flower Show
Has anyone been to the Philadelphia Flower Show? Any comments on this. And is there a bonsai exhibit there that would make it worth my while to attend?

It is very worthwhile bonsai-wise. Chase Rosade --who is headquartered near Phil. has a large regular exhibit and demo and the local bonsai club usually puts on a "bonsai show within a show" at the event. Neither offers anything for sale--but the exhibition trees alone are worth the trip
The actual bonsai vendors can be a little spotty, with mallsai or something a little better, are the usual fare. If you've never been to the Philly Flower Show before, beware, crowds are intense and sometimes frustrating...It is a fun event though. |

Just to expand a little: The "local Bonsai club" is actually the state organization, The Pennsylania Bonsai Society, and their exhibit usually features some wonderful trees. Also a great chance to find a local club! These guys are good! I agree about the vendors. There are some very reliable ones there (Meehan's) as well as those who will tell you a juniper will love it on top of your tv. For bonsai related vendors, you'll do better at the MidAtlantic Show in East Hanover NJ (Near Morristown) in April, but the Philly show is very much worth a visit. You can even meet Dale Cochoy there! Last edited by Bart Thomas : 25-Feb-2004 at 01:07 PM. |

thankee gentlemen, i'll probably check it out. And don't worry I have enough knowledge under my belt to see through the old indoor juniper trick. As far as joining a club I agree that would be a good place to try to find one, however, I am moving to Boston in early July so I don't want to plant my metaphoric roots into a club here just to have to be repotted come summer. Bart, do you know if Dale will be setting up a stand where he may perhaps be selling any of the pots I have seen him post on this sight, he does have some lookers.

He usually has some great stuff, leaving me little money at the end of the show! If you have something in mind, drop him a message. Remember that for Dale, you have to go to the MidAtlantic. I'm sure that there will be flyers at the Rosade booth in Philly. |
