Nursery Tour Part II

Last year, while my wife worked diligently at her Convention, I had the opportunity to spend three days in L.A. on her dime.

If you are new to the forum and would like to see the first part go here:Bonsai Nursery Tour

I did not have the chance to make it to Kim's Bonsai last year. I have read about the great deals in the magazine, and heard alot of things from people, and have seen them at the shows. Obviously, you just can't pack everything in a van for a show, so I concentrated on this nursery for the whole day. I was not disapointed.

My wife stayed at the Hollywood Renaisannce Hotel, home of the Kodak theater, permanet home to the "Oscar's".
The views out of the window were breathtaking, and the weather was warm and clear. This is a view out of our 16th floor window. That white streak on the mountain is the famous Hollywood sign. It did not come out to clear. It looks good when the photo is regular size though.

The nursery is way out in the desert, in a town called Phelan, and it is a gas station , a few stores, and a post office. Like a derilect from the ol west.

On the road to Phelan, I passed through an area called "Mormon Rocks". Very cool sandstone formations. I would like to come back here and look for sandstone suiseki some time.

I drove back and forth on Phelan road a couple dozon times till I finally saw this sign. There was no sign of a nursery though. There was a smaller sign with an arrow that pointed down this dusty road. I looked in the distance and could barely make out some buildings in the distance. I thought the whole thing was a mirage.

I was soon to find out this is no mirage!!

Well, I nearly tore the pan out of my car on this rutted road. They must have flash floods out here and the road needed some grading. I got to the buildings, and started to scope things out. I first noticed the huge piles of soil makings. All the needed stuff, lava, sand, pumice, granite grit but no humus of any kind.

I turned around and the magic begins. Bonsai everywhere. There were buildings full of bonsai. Shade cloth covered areas as large as half a football field. There were buildings made of pvc pipe type stufff and covered with plastic. This guy, Benny Kim, was not there. He was in Korea on a buying trip. The folks there said there were not any restrictions on bonsai from Korea as long as they have been held by the USDA for the whole two years. The guys watching the place told me to go anywhere I wanted, no place was off limit's and that if it didn't have a price it was not for sale. I FOUND A PRICE ON MOST EVERYTHING! My kind of nursery.

This was the plant that I wanted to take home. It was a double trunk San Jose juniper, allready bonsai pruned to a fantastic shape. This pic is poor due to the other stock behind it. I tried to fit it in my Honda but it would not fit. $550.00. I almost fell over when I saw the price. I could not believe my eyes. I decided that I better look around more since I might see something better.

These are tables full of speciman trees near the one I just showed. Where possible I tried to get the prices on the pots in the pics.

The more I looked around, the more I knew I was in trouble. I had a budget of 600.00 dollars to spend. I wanted the most bang for my buck, but I wanted to spread it around too. I still had the Bonsai-a-thon at the Huntington tomarrow, with vendors there.

I decided that I would spend half here today and the other three bills at the Bonsai-a-thon.

OI had a hard time deciding what I would buy with the measily 300.00 I set my goal at. There were so many great trees that I could take if I wanted to blow the whole wad here.
