I couldnt post exhibit photos without thinking of my ole pal Al Keppler.

Here is a shohin stand. (sorry no individual pics)

The upper right tree is a tiny gem of a Spirea, dainty, but beautiful.

The lower left is a boxwood.

There is a chaemy... an elm, and some other ones I forgot to note....

Well that concludes the pictures I have. There were quite a few other trees at the exhibit, I was not able to get most of them, and or the picture did not turn out so hot.

BTW, my favorite is the Larch forest and the second runner up is the White Cedar forest.

Thanks Paul for the shots! I very much appreciate the shohin group on the stand. Very interesting display.

Any ideas on how long they must remain in the exhibit?
Is the exhibit docented by bonsai people?
Does a club take care of the trees during their stay?

Thanks, Al

Hello bonsaial...well i went there just yesterday and was amazed it was great. And the word on hwo logn they are in the building im not sure anywheres from 4-7 days perhaps..im not sure
and there are bonsai people inthere to answer questions...and make sure they dont butcher them. and there was a Workshop going on with a bonsaist and many many Japanese Junipergarden plants. and were sale after he styled them for about 40$ each...so pretty windblowing stuff ...i can say i enjoyed my self..
And at the BMK bonsai store i picked up a starter juniper, and a little pot with there own soil. Very nice experience for me and thanks for the postings of the pctures...i was wondering if someone was goign to do it =]

Hi Al!!! and Master S.T

Al, the Minnesota Bonsai Society does the entire thing, members haul their trees in on Friday Morning and out on Saturday night. It is a two day exhibition, each and every Labor day weekend.
Your welcome for the shohin pics. I truly did think of you when standing in front of it.....I know you enjoy those and the stands. As do I. Master is right about the members being there. every five or so trees there would be a member there to answer questions and talk about the trees if needed. The sweet thing that I noticed was that they would let you enjoy the experience without taking that "used car salesman" persona. If you had a question, they were there. But left you to enjoy it all.

Master, You and I may have been standing darn close to each other. Lionel was doing the demo's on the garden junipers. He used to drive up here to Duluth and give workshops for our club, that is until I started doing them with another member. Not to take anything away from Lionel, he is a great guy and bonsaiist. Just it took a load off having to drive the entire way up to Duluth. Besides I am cheap. I get discounts at the nursery where the workshops take place... which reminds me, if you ever get up this way.....Edelweiss Landscape and Nursery has a great selection of pre-bonsai, starters, pots etc. Their bone piles are unbelievable!!! Alpine and dwarf varieties of darn near any conifer or deciduous tree. (shameless plug)

Side note open for debate.....There are those that will caution you to be weary of buying demo trees....alot of these are thrust into bonsai life at the wrong time. Here it is late august/early september, and he is styling a juniper, which is zone 5. I am not sure about you, but I live in a zone 3/4. But please, if ya got a comment about demo trees, start a new thread.

I agree with you about BMK by the way. Nice trees, but wayyyyyy overpriced. Nice to see them in the international market place. Sometimes, if you actually go to BMK up near Blaine, in the late fall or spring, they have amazing sales.

Paul

LUV those forests, larch & cedar. By chance were they designed by the same person? Fantastic wonderful really loved 'em. They really capture a feeling.

But that cork bark elm with the fantastic trunk coulda used a couple more years of branch development b4 the show

Pootsie,

Yes they were from the same artist. The White Cedar forest won last years best in show. BTW welcome to the forum, I have seen you over at GW for some time.

I am told now that the trees this year are brought in at 10pm on Thursday night, and judged Friday morning.

Some of the trees were also lent out from the Como Park Conservatory. I do not know which for sure, but am told the Buddhist Pine (Podocarpus) was one of them.

Paul
