Japanese Maples? Visited Esveld today.

The sun was shining, temps up in the 90s and I took a trip to Boskoop and visited Esveld, the largest maple nurserie in Europe. Here are some pics I took...

Don't aks me what cultivars which tree is, my head is swimming. Bought a good book though

One tree I will single out, but I'll get to that later...
Here goes the first batch...

This Japanese maple was brought back from Japan in ~1885 and was the first of it's kind in Europe. It is now the oldest living Japanese maple in Europe. From THIS tree many of the cultivars we now know have been derived.

It's http://www.esveld.nl they are situated in Boskoop in the Netherlands.

They ship to the whole world, in spring before budbreak, and in fall after leafdrop, i.e when the plants are dormant.

I spent some time talking with someone from the family and they've got very interesting things to tell about their soil. Apparently they've switched to an organic system using EM Effective Microorganisms together with clay minerals, bokashi and chalk from seashells. They've gone from 10% loss in 15000 plants per year, to 6 plants (not a percentage!) lost this year so far, If what he said is true.

Especially effective in making maples resistant to Verticillium and other wilting funguses.

I did ask, and was told that this combination was totally applicable to potted plants as well, and used just for that purpose by them as well.
The clay minerals provide certain nutrients,
the bokashi contains come nitrogen in usable form and is a great medium for the microorganisms, and the chalk balances the ph level.

Does anybody have any experience with this? Or knows more about EM?

Check these links on Effective Microorganisms.:

Very nice. I was there last year in September. I saw a couple I wanted - but as you said, they only take the trees out twice per year.

Relatively close is the new location for Lodder Bonsai bv - in Harmelen, near Utrecht. Absolutely worth a visit. It must be the largest bonsai nursery in Europe. It's HUGE. Apparantly on Saturdays there are touring busses of foreign Bonsai-tourists from France, Italy Germany and UK. They buy pallet-loads of trees... :-)

Starter material - like small Chinese Elm are a bargain at €4 ($5) each. Good sized acer are €80 ($100). Loads of beautiful specimen trees.
