Wow. Wonderful displays, especially the cascade juniper in the tokonoma display.
Keep 'em coming! I'm feeling very sad not be able to come down for this one... -Carl

I was there Friday,
had a lot of fun attending Walter's presentation on native Californian/etc. trees. He talked about how these trees inspire him in the creation of his "infamous" naturalistic style trees. In his presentation he showed us slides of beautiful old trees in nature. Then, using virtuals, placed them into bonsai pots. It was quite a trip, very inspiring. I happen to share his philosophy. He is a good speaker, very animated and passionate. I've also exchanged a few words with him. Afterwards, I talked to a few japanese friends attending his presentation. They are having a helluva hard time in trying to accept his views. They belong to the old japanese school and nothing will change that, not even a gun in their face. I also asked Boon about his thoughts on Walter, he said he likes Shinji Suzuki better. No surprise there. So, Walter has his work cut out for him for the next decade. I spent a few hundred dollars on a couple of fabulous collected redwoods from MENDOCINO BONSAI. I couldn't belive the quality of material these quys have. I am glad I took the trouble of driving 4 hours to Fresno. Attila |

It's great to see some of what happened at the GSBF convention. I really wanted to go, especially to see the contrasts (as well as commonalities) between Shinji Suzuki and Walter Pall.
And, sorry guys, I hate to sound like the Japanese Bonsai Police but: ATTILA: "Afterwards, I talked to a few japanese friends attending his presentation. They are having a helluva hard time in trying to accept his views. They belong to the old japanese school and nothing will change that, not even a gun in their face. I also asked Boon about his thoughts on Walter, he said he likes Shinji Suzuki better. No surprise there. So, Walter has his work cut out for him for the next decade." I feel like I'm being proselytized to Walter Pallism. As much as I respect Walter, I still have to ask why would the Japanese have to accept his views even if it takes 'a gun in their face'? I belong to the 'old' Japanese school, and I do not believe the naturalistic style is the next step in the evolution of bonsai. If you like it, great; enjoy it. Howard

Thinking about the diverse and often diametrically opposed tastes of bonsai enthusiasts, I can't help but be excited about the passionate debates.
I am happy that people disagree. I enjoy seing people taking opposite sides on the issues of bonsai design. That's what keeps the art alive and evolving. It provides colour, diversity,...adversity. It would be terribly boring if we all agreed on everything. So, thanks Howard for disagreing with this "naturalistic nonsense". Regards, Attila |

Thanks Al for the photos. The massive juniper is truly unbelieveable. I can't imagine how this tree could of been dug out and then moved and transported to whereever it had to go.
