I decided to tack on my workshop here too. I took only one. I had to work most of the time, and had little time for doing most of the fun stuff. I did manage to take the Jim Gremel workshop on the last day.

This was a two tree workshop, even though there wasn't time to work on the last tree. I was given instruction on that and will post that later.

This tree was a 1 gallon shimpaku and ugly as the witch in the Wizard of Oz. Jim enter the room and asks if anyone had seen uglier material? No one had. The trees were just shoots about 1/2 thick shooting staright up out of the can. Some had 10 or 12 shoots some had as little as 5. Mine had 5.

The trunks were wrapped tightly with raffia, and wired with diminishing sizes of thick copper wire. Copper would be needed to hold the springy saplings. After the raffia and wire was applied we were to start bending the trunks. He told us to close our eyes and clear our heads. Have no plan, just bend it up hard and wait for the styling later.

I started to bend and was amazed at how much pressure I could exert on this tree. I twisted it as hard as I dare and then we started to style them. I must say that Jim did no work to my plant, he told me he could not improve on what I did, so just let it go for two years and I should have something pretty great.

The front for now.

Looking down into the labryinth

Many of the small branches were wired to be turned into jins at a later date. Jim says this is the way to achieve realism with all the branches going all corkscrew, and have the jins do the same.

Thanks, Bonsai-al

Indeed.. outstanding bit of wire-work!
Raw whips can be tough to arrive at an interesting conclusion. You seem to have done a great job.
hint:
on the branches you wish to jin... let the wire cut into the bark deeply. You may want to re wire it too to make a few more scars in it as well before you make the jin. What that does is create some texture for you to work with. I've done that a few times.. though I don't have any photos for examples... but I have always liked what nature did to the branches before any carving.
All the best!

Great find in tree purchases. It is always great to have an idea of what you want to purchase and why.

I really like your workshop tree.
