Goodies..oh Yea Baby
NOTE FROM ADMIN: THIS IS THE ONE OF SEVERAL THREADS AL HAS BEGUN AS PART OF THE GSBF CONVENTION COVERAGE.
After enjoying this thread, you may find these others of interest: 1. GSBF Convention Update 2. Convention, cont'd 3. GSBF Convention #3[HR]Thought I would share some of the things I bought at this years convention. I didn't buy that much this year , but what I bought was good, or at least I think so. I'll start with the least expensive and work up. I spyed these trees in a booth and decided that they had the characteristics of something that would do well in the ground for a couple of years. I bought this house now and can put something in the ground without fear that I may have to dig it up at the wrong time of year. I'll probably wake up tomarrow and all the leaves on the cotoneaster will be eaten by the snail. Wheres my slotcar track copper? A couple elms and a cotoneaster

I have wanted to have a shohin forest for sometime. I have never been able to find the perfect material for the forest.
I have seen tridents used and the work well. I decided that tridents would be my pick since they seem to hold up well to the valley heat. I tried reg mountain maples last year and they do not work in the tiny trays. I wanted the trees to look like trees, not pine trees. Finding stock for forests that don't look like pine trees is difficult. I spotted this little trident pair and found them to be the perfect center piece for my composition. These look like maple trees in a meadow. The trunks are perfect. The large tree is about 1/2 across and about 9" tall. It will be cut down a little.

I picked up these two gallon cans full of tridents for the remaining trees that I will use in the forest. There are 3 trees in each can. The sizes vary, and I will probably use 3 of the trees for a total of 5 in the forest.

How could I pass up Mas and Gary Ishii. They had the usual kishu's there and I bought one just to have something to post this spring. Should be able to make a great Moyogi style shohin out of this baby. The trunk is 1" across at the base, grat flare on the trunk and super taper. Branches of course all over the place, and I can hardly wait to style this one.

I bought this stand for a tree that I will be styling and posting here in Jan. This pot from Jim Gremel will be the pot the plant goes in and this will be the stand I display it on. The plant: a neagari style han-Kengai Kishu shimpaku.
Neagari- Exposed roots

Closeup of the stand. The wood; Wenge
Very graceful line on this. Should contrast well with the exposed roots to soften the scene.

I have always wanted an exhibition quality signature Tokonome shohin pot from Japan. Of course my wallet is never fat enough to spend the money on one.
I found this one and decided that they are only going up in price and I need it for the shohin convention this Feb. Dimensions; 7"W x 5.5"d x 1.25" tall

Closeup of the finish. The pots are burnished after the leather hard stage. They are polished with a felt pad before firing.
