Thank you for posting these excellent pictures of inspiring bonsai. I have a question about the picture (pa266996adjsm.jpg) of a Korean hornbeam. The tree in this picture has fully green leaves, as of that late October date. My specimens, and others I have seen, were well into their fall color by that time. Is it possible that this specimen was maintained under glass for a while before the show, resulting in the rich green color?

I know that different details of culture affect things like this; just wondered whether there is a technique to delay (or conversely, to speed up) autumn coloring in deciduous trees.

Thanks,

riprap

Hi Riprap,

I don't know whether the tree owner is a forum member or reads this forum, but if you post your question as a comment under the picture in that Gallery, maybe he/she will see it and can post an answer. The Yamato board at least will be reviewing the photos to select a couple for publicity purposes, so someone may know who owns it.

My own hornbeams turned about a 3 weeks ago and pretty promptly dropped their leaves. I think the timing depends on the microclimate and whether the tree was defoliated. Defoliated trees seem to hold their leaves a bit longer and have better fall color. When I asked in Japan about the Japanese maples I was told it takes a certain number of consecutive nights below a specific temperature for the best color, but the details escaped me, and it could well have been a fable.

The Yamato Club has members throughout the East bay and some in Alameda and San Francisco too. Maybe there is just some regional differences? I get pretty lousy fall color, usually..

Regards,

Matt

Down here in Oz the fable is to stick Japanese maples in the refridgerator at night for ten nights in a row and everyday put them back outside!!!!!

They think it works and produces great results in autumn.

Makes sense if you think about the conditions.

David

BTW I loved some of the trees on display. Very awesome. Was this pine the main attraction of the show.

Hi David,

Yes, two trees - the large pine and the large juniper, both photographed with Yamato's Sensei Johnny Uchida, flanked the stage area. They are both very impressive in person, probably each 36 inches above the pot

Regards,

Matt

Matt, thanks for posting the show. I know if I still were out there I would have went to this show and posted it. I remember going to Mr. Uchida's nursery in Hayward and him working on a 3 tree planting of black pine. I watched him for about 20 mins and thought someday I will be able too work on tree's of such bueaty.
