A competition would be good and appeal to some of the folks. I think others would enjoy and learn something from watching. I think the challenge would come from finding enough quality material. I really don't even think there would need to be a club association.

John,

I don't think high-quality material is needed. As a matter of fact, I'd like the material to be either just cheap nursery stock or problem-laden material that no one seems to be able to figure out. That's the challenging stuff. It could be hilarious!!!!

I agree about your demos. Those are always great. Sorry I missed it this year, but I stayed with our display except when the fountain finally overwhelmed my brain about the maximum capacity of my bladder.

There remains the option of moving the Carolina Bonsai Expo to the third week in October. It seems that in recent years, the peak autumn colors have been later in October, and more visitors to the region later in the month might be beneficial as far as attendance at the event is concerned.

(This way we could buy nice trees at Bill's for the show in Asheville!!!)

Sounds like a great idea JQ! I did send Arthur a pm hoping that some solution might be found.

Well, I agree with Bill's philosophy of display, which he discussed above. Unless the stated premise of a show is to showcase trees designed and developed solely by the owner/artist, it should be expected that trees of various pedigrees will be displayed. I have no problem with telling you I bought a tree last month, last year, or five years ago, or developed it from raw stock.
IMHO, it should be about the trees, not the 'owner'.

Let's compound the issue a bit by considering this:

If the display is to showcase the bonsai of a club, but the "club" members have never seen the specific bonsai before, is that permissable and/or appropriate?

Sort of sounds like a guy showing up at a Corvette enthusiast rally with a 3-day rental to me.

An excellent idea which should be discussed with Arthur and the arboretum.

In fact, this possibility was conveyed to me by Arthur himself in a recent email.
