Nice tour Al.

I hope that river of his doesn't flood, or there'll be quite a few bonsai floating away on those barrels.

Regards,

Fish.

Thanks Al for this little presentation.

Being in the bonsai retailing business is really tough, as we all know. At the same time, for someone who is passionate about bonsai, running a business like this must be infinitely rewarding.

Could you share with us your thoughts on what would it take to make a nursery like this successful in the long term. Maybe you had a chance to talk to the owners about this.
Not too many survive beyond the first five years, unless they have other means of subsidising the operation, or they are very good on the business side, in addition to enjoying creating bonsai.

Regards,
Attila

I didn't even get to the azeala's last night. If you need a showstopper, this place has them. The first picture is of a classical styled azeala. The reast of the photo's show what Brad calls "train wrecks". These are azeala that have lost whole branches, or entire tops from their tree. They are still healthy, whats left of them, and with care could be salvaged into something beautiful. They are fast growers and I am sure that they can be had pretty cheap.

He also had a good amount of small neagri style penjing elms for sale. These look good in small pots or gift giving, or for planting on rocks. I plan on useing mine on the petrified wood that I aquired during the summer.

A last parting shot of little Blake taking me and my wife to our car with all the goodies. This guy is only 6 years old, but handles the golf cart like a pro. I asked him to stop, so I could shoot the photo's of the river and the Monterey pine. He nearly shot my wife and I through the windshield. He knows where the brake pedal is!

Now I don't know how the rest of the USA is when it comes to bonsai capitilists, but out here in California, roadside bonsai stands are on every corner. We passed this one about 1/4 mile from the nursery. I guess this lady who ran the stand figures that if you didn't spend the whole wad at the nursery, she might have a shot at ya when you leave.

Take care and check out the nursery soon. Thanks, Al

Al, we do have roadside stands in Ohio, but the last time I passed one I saw that the sign said "Banzai" so I figured I'll just stick to the established nurseries.

I mean, I don't want to be a snob, but shouldn't a merchant have some idea of what it is they sell?

These folks look like they know which end is up. If I was in Cali, I'd stop by with my next spare wad of $$$

I went to the Blue Oak Nursery yesterday. Al certinaly has it right. This place is like heaven to bonsai folks. Brad showed us everything in the nursery just like he showed Al. Brad has added more inventory including many collected 100 yr. old grape vines. The Blue Oak Nursery is now one of the largest bonsai nurserys in the state. Brad has installed a large covered awning with seats for over 200 people for demonstrations and workshops. He has scheduled all of the Modesto Bonsai Club meetings to be held in this new facility. The Modesto Bonsai Club schedule through the next year includes demonstrators such as Ted Matson, Ben Oki, John Thompson, Cheryl Manning, Jim Gremel Johnny Uchidia and George Fugita. David Nguy will be demonstrating next weekend. Brad would like to host bonsai club nursery tours and will have his lovely picnic grounds open for barbeques for the club members. Bonsai clubs will have access to his meeting area for demonstrations or workshops. Brad has built a revoving table for the demo area that is about 3' X 3' which will help everyone to be see the work being done. I am the program chair for my club and I will be scheduling a visit during the next few months for the club membership. The Modesto Bonsai Club's show is in April so that weekend would be ideal for anyone to visit the Blue Oak Nursery and take in the club show at the same time. I highly recommend that everyone should visit this place. When you go remember to say that Al sent you. Al, thankyou so much for the good photographs of your visit.
