Matt, i take on board what you are saying and agree with you that under certain circumstances shows are not appropraiate in certain areas and that other times of year you get other interest, but do you think that there is a general lack of winter time shows, surely we are missing out on another aspect of bonsai? as andy says this as a pity.

Hi Jonny, I can only speak for my area. Maybe we're just lucky out here. We have winter shows here in California - BIB last week, BABA next week and the Shohin conference first week of February. Most regional club shows begin well into spring, and there are quite a few in the fall, too - notably the GSBF convention which is usually around the end of October beginning of November. Home & Garden shows are underway this month. One thing is for sure: you need a superior quality tree to show it out-of-leaf. It may be hard to galvanize the membership into show prep activities coming out of the holiday season, so you need a committed membership, too! Regards, Matt

Hi Steve,(treekutter) The tree in photo no. 2 is a cal Juniper, as well as the large tree in no. 6. The tree in 6 is Boon's logo tree and the tree he has on his business card. It is a Cal. Juniper trunk with grafted on shimpaku foliage. I do not knoe who started the foliage, but it is kishu I think, which means that it may well have had the hand of Ishii on it in the past.
If anyone out there has some history of this plant I would like to read about it. This tree is well over 48" tall. Thanks, Al

It may be a good time of the year for you who live in the warmer climates but right now my bonsai are frozen. To take them out of their present state would be a disaster. So as far as "the proper time" it all depends on what part of the country or the world your from. In our Northern climate Spring through Fall shows seems to be the most appropriate. The word "proper" doesn't seem work here.

Gary, et al,
Let me observe that part of advisable show preparation is not letting the trees we plan to show get "frozen" or "covered in snow," etc... If we're going to be showing a tree, preparation began months before and it is stupid to then let the elements have their way with what we've done. Showing a bonsai in its proper condition also means that we contribute to that condition, too. Arguments that "my trees are covered in snow - frozen solid - pot filled with winter weeds - not in the proper pot - foliage discolored - suffering from some dieback due to cold" - etc... are not relevant. That's why these trees have intelligent human beings taking care of them, so that the ones we plan to show are in proper condition. Al,
Is number 12 an American Larch? If so that is perhaps the best example I have seen. -Reed |

Maybe where you live a Jan./Feb. exhibition is possible, (or in California) but in the parts of the country where there is a real winter, our hardy trees are under mulch and probably snow. Kinda hard to get at them. You really need to live in a colder climate during the winter before you can make judgements about what is or is not possible in such a climate.
