Those are very good pictures! I wish I could have been there. I plan on attending the show in Fresno on March 27th, maybe I'll see ya there!

Some superb photos in there Al, thanks for posting them. Do you, or andy, no if the show is always at this time of year? its unusual to see a show in the winter when the broad leaves have no leaves, I can only think of the Nolanders Trophy in europe that does this.
On that note what do other people think should there be more shows in winter to see branch structures and where mistakes cant be hid? Cheers Jonny. |

Jonny,
Yes, Boon's show is held at this time each year. It is held at this time for a specific reason - the proper condition of nearly all bonsai. Like Kokufu-ten and Sakufu-ten in Japan, shows held at this time of year show off bonsai in their prime condition - evergreens have mature foliage without the new shoots of spring's growth and deciduous trees show off their structure (Winter viewing is why most deciduous trees are subjects of bonsai - from the Japanese perspective). Also, many flowering trees are either in-flower or beginning to swell flower buds (in the milder climates). Anyway, between January and February is the "proper" time to show bonsai. Any other time and the trees are out of condition. Few (if any) organizations in the U.S. care about this, however. A pity. Andy, thanks for the reply, its very interesting that in the west we have this copncept that shows should be in the growing months, its a shame, were missing out on the amazing branch work on the broadleaves.
Nut, it could be a bit of a round trip for me to get there and back! Cheers Jonny |

Hi Andy, If you are talking specifically about late winter/early spring shows, timing depends on where you are located geographically, and that time isn't ideal for every species of tree. Some folks are under a couple feet of snow at this time, others in the southern hemisphere are in mid-summer. Personally I prefer autumn shows like Taikan-ten. I like seeing fall color and fruit, and one can show leafless trees at that time, too. Your wisteria isn't going to be blooming in Jan/Feb unless you own a greenhouse or live in Australia. Many Cryptomeria, Juniper and pines turn a deathly shade of russet this time of year. It isn't that cold here for sure, but my white pines go gold-tone until the weather warms and won't regain their blue-green color for a month or two. I don't even want to talk about my False Cypress: I repotted it once at an early spring workshop and a casual visitor asked me if I thought I "could save it." Many seasons, many trees - many opportunities for shows! Best, Matt
