Bay Island Bonsai 6th annual exhibit
This is a terrific Catlin elm forest that was a hit at the show. What an exciting thing to be a part of! My Intensive class last week was show prep for some incredible trees. The people are fantastic, and if I had any money left, I certainly would have bought a tree at the auction! This corkbark Chinese elm was Member's Choice for small deciduous trees. It's about eight inches tall. Believe it or not, this is a youngish zuisho Japanese black pine. In just a few years the foliage pads will fill out and it will be an outstanding bonsai. As it is, it won Member's Choice for large conifer. Unfortunately, my photography was less than exceptional, but you can see a few more of the trees at my website. Chris |

Bob, it was super of you to look me up! It's nice to be able to meet bonsai friends in person. I was exhausted and elated and wished I didn't have to come home so soon. Everyone in that club is so accepting and focused on learning and producing the best bonsai they can, it's a breath of fresh air. And to be honest, the attitude in that club is such that I would pay to go out their if they were gathering about butterfly collecting!
I have updated (again) the article on my website about the show as well as one on show prep. You can see them at Sashi-eda Bonsai. I would also encourage you, if you are in driving distance, to consider the Bay Island Bonsai club. Most of the people in that club have multiple memberships. I doubt Brent would be disappointed if you learned from other sources too. One of the interesting things about this club: members are required to attend nine half-day workshops per year. This is an excellent way to ensure the student is progressing in their bonsai knowledge, and to help encourage participation. Anyway, thanks again for looking me up. Hope to see you again sometime.
