Whidn, The last two years I started in January and did't lose a tree, and my low temps are usually 5-10 degrees colder than Lafayette. As long as we don't get a long freezing spell of several days, it should be okay. If you want to be cautious, wait till February to be safe. Good Luck

I've got another 2 months or so to go before collecting, depending on how early spring comes. :--(

If I were still in Maine, it would be 3 months to go, at least.

I feel myself so outsider here, you're talking about collecting in the middle of the winter..
We'll probably have at least 4 months until collecting is possible.

I just read from a paper that the ground's frozen all the way down to 1,7 meters (~5 feet) already, probably getting more frozen every moment.

Zeb

PS. Last night the temps dropped below 0, and I mean fahrenheit. Minus 18 degrees centigrade.

Zeb, Our high temp today will be 70 degrees F. I hope winter hangs around a bit longer. I'm not ready for spring yet. I guess we all have our burdens to bear.

Take heart, we live.... where we live! Some of us have extreme winters which last forever. Some have more moderate winters and some have no real winter at all. Unless we plan on moving, we (and our trees) are subject to what mother nature gives us.

I am beginning to understand why growing Bonsai from native, and adaptable species is best! It is alot easier to just deal with the trees for the winter with minimal work!

Zeb... spring will come!

Central California.

No real winter at all to speak of yet, the Japanese plum and apricot are already in bloom, these trees harold spring and I am beginning to understand why they are so loved. We have not yet eaten the last of the citrus and there are plums and apricots on the way, there will be no lack in our garden this year. This does not mean that we can not get some foul weather, but for the most part we are already into our growing season. We are bedding out seeds, starting early cuttings and removing trees from the field to growing containers. This also means tilling new rows and replanting what is not yet ready to come out of the field. The very busy time of year is already upon us, spring!

I'm in Bonitah's area... Sure, no winter but our SUMMERS!!!

They'll keep you inside about as much as a winter will!

I've got about a month until the average date of last frost Feb 17th.

At least half my trees still have leaves on them to some degree. All the evergreens are growing happily. Boxwoods, the exception, showing bronze leaves of deep slumber...

We may get an arctic blast in the next week or so though...
