Hi Andy,

A couple of things. First, it's only fair to point out that much of the material on the Artful Environments show that can be found at TBE is also on the Pacific Rim Collection's site, albeit not as nicely presented.

[Griping about the photo quality on the Weyerhauser site snipped by the author - see below.]

When I saw the picture of the tamirisk, I said "self" I have seen this tree before. I looked through my photo albums and sure enough I had a foto from The GSBF convention in Orange County Cal. 1994. Tree on display by John Naka. Doesn't look that much different 8 yers ago.

Good news: I finally got permission from Dave DeGroot to post a serioes of pictures to the IBC gallery. Take a look at the
Artful Environments show thread on the IBC.

Best regards,

OMC - thanks for your pictures, the trees were mostly beautiful, but unfortunately completely ruined by the way they were exhibited.

I dont think i have ever seen such lovely trees displayed so badly in all my time...just MHO

And better news yet: thanks to Dave DeGroot, I finally got permission to post the Artful Environments pictures here on BonsaiTALK. Matt created a special gallery for them:

Artful Environments show

If you haven't seen them yet, enjoy!

And I'd love see folks' comments on what they liked and didn't like for the particular trees. You can always post these right to the gallery itself.

All the best,
Old Mister

I know that there has been mostly criticism about this display but I would like to add a couple comments to the discussion.

First, when I saw this display with Carl, my wife was also along. While she appreciates my bonsai, she is not "into it" like I am. That said, she "oo" and "ad" all the way though it. She loved them more than the single tree displays. So maybe if we're thinking about spreading the word, it wouldn't hurt to be a little less purist about it.

Second, even though many of them may be a "miss" I thought the idea was great. I guess I'm not a purist, so I appreciate any attempt at expanding the art and incorporating other art forms. I keep hearing the lament that bonsai may be in decline or that we need to get more people involved then we criticize anything that is not "pure" bonsai, meaning one abstract tree in a pot (Yes, I mean exactly that...all bonsai trees are abstract, even when we think of them as naturaliistic).

Third, my favorites: DeGroots tree against that blue painted cloth is stunning. The other not shown on this site, but I hope elsewhere, was the tree with a carved door in the foreground. The carved tree in the door was magnificent and the perfect juxtaposition for the tree in the background.

Earl, i agree it was a great idea and i dont think im a 'purist' at all. The Germans did it very very well in most cases (not the maple with the orange background, you just lost the tree to the painting) but this display was just awful. Im sure each item was lovely on its own but in the way they were combined...ergh (Except the juniper raft/group, i cant recall, that was not so good IMO)

OMC, do you know Dave DeGroot well enough to ask him to write a brief personal defense of the display. I don't mean the formal stuff we can read in a brochure but how he felt about the display and how and where it might have succeeded or failed?

I ask this of Carl, but it could be any of you that could visit with him.

I would love to see his comments posted here.

I'd love to see his thoughts too.

But I'm afraid I don't really know him well enough to ask, yet.

Perhaps someone else does?
