ACBS Day Of Bonsai

Hello Everyone,

This past weekend the Azalea City Bonsai Club held it's annual "Day of Bonsai" in Mobile, Alabama. The focus was on camelia, podocarpus and carving jin. Club members Joe Day, Rob Moak, Russell Coker and Fred Morales gave lectures and demos. The camelia lecture/demo was of particular interest as little has been published on this species, especially in the U.S.
After reading Walter Pall's recent post on Joe Day, I was especially looking forward to touring Joe's back yard. So many collected specimens, fantastic group plantings, handmade slabs, stock in development...unbelievable stuff. (And BTW, Rob Moak's collection was also fantastic).
It was great to see the work done with collected native species and field grown stock, with hardly an import in sight. It's encouraging to know that an extraordinary collection can be put together without a fat wallet. A little hard work and lot's of vision is all that's necessary. As Walter stated, Joe is one of the thinkers in American bonsai and he has many insights into bonsai, both technical and aesthetic. With a group tour, Joe was pulled in many directions at once so I can't wait to get back to Mobile to hear more in a less distracting setting.
Sorry for the marginal quality of the photos, but here are a few of the trees at the demo.
