Mr. Andy,

Great progression but I would make 2 suggestions...

1. Removing a bit of the foilage in the lower portions to allow some glimpses of the fantastic branching you have developed on the tree...

2. You probably should bring this tree to me when you come up in August, before you completly ruin a great tree my amigo...

As you know, I am only joking about #2 but, I truly am looking forward to your August trip...And, a very special thanks for the CD and autographed BT issue from Brussels...I know that was a fantastic experience...

Regards
Behr

Andy -

I am also fond of this tree. The first photo (naked picture) is outstanding.

The contrast of the tree and the background with subtle lighting add drama to this photo. I also prefer the blue pot with the tree.

Hi Andy, Very nice! These trees are great fun to grow since they develop so quickly as can be seen in your photos. I agree with Candy regarding the blue pot, or maybe even a light green or cream. Seeing this has given me an idea as to what I want to do with mine which has a higher more rounded crown that I'm not real happy with, Thanks

Wow Andy, That leafless pic looks like the bigger, older brother to one on my back porch that I just trimmed and defoliated. I lost a branch inside this winter and needed to move a couple to fill the hole.
Pretty similar...right down to the "Clevage" in front
Not TOO bad I guess for about 4 zones to the north of you!
It's about four years from a cut back on trunk to no branches. It was a real overgrown mess I brought back from Florida. It looked like a "fist" after I cut it back.
I decided to defoliate all my big WLF's this year except the biggest one. Soooo, I have 5 that look like that now!

thanks

Thanks for the comments .

This tree is actually a root cutting, two large roots that have grown together..thus the cleft that Dale mentioned. When it first started i put it in a 6" rectangle. It's now in a 24" oval.I've defoliated it once this year already(in february) and will do so once more this year.
Candy,...I have to admit that it has never looked as good as it did in that blue pot and totally naked. It's grown a bit too much for that pot now though.

Dale,....come on down and grab grampz on the way....i have a bunch of nerifolias that need defoliating...it'll be character building .

Behr,...I lost a larger branch on the inside,so at the moment it looks best imo in its leafed out state.I know exactly what you are saying thouh and maybe next time i defoliate I can see some improvement.

Sauce,....at one time this one had a higher crown. The last 2 years have been spent trying to keep the apex in check while letting the lower branches spread out and grow.I like the wider version better.

Hi Andy,

You already know from the past couple of years in chat I am most fond of this tree...one of my favs! I do like the blue pot better, not because of shape or anything I just like the colour better is all . It still looks darn good, the missing branch you mentioned I would have never known of w/o you bringing it up. Thanks for the pics from the Brussels event and thank you for the nice surprise inside as a well. (Walter Pall autographed copy of BT101)

PS,
Update us with a pic when you defoliate this bad boy again.

never satisfied

I have changed the pot and viewing angle(just a little).I also adjusted the angle of the trunk(just a little..I needed a slightly deeper pot to do this). It seems to have opened this tree up a bit so that the inside branches are more visible......I think it's an improvement.

I find it interesting how the willow leaf bark turns red when wet.

Hi Andy,
I just noticed this post update.
Please forgive me, but I thought I'd also update my defoliated "brother" from this spring.
Also, two shots frnt/bck of another WLF that is similar looking. It was also defoliated this spring.
