Yes, commonly called the butterfly bush. many unusual plants can and have been used for bonsai including grape vines, rose bushes, lilacs, jasmine, thyme, blueberries, etc.

The point was larry, bonsai is defined as a plant in a tray.

This definition precedes you by many years. Grafting many seedlings together doesn't disqualify a plant from being a bonsai any more than grafting a branch on does.

You said that you wouldn't call this bonsai, I respect that opinion, however it is a wrong opinion.

Now these are not bonsai....

If you respect my opinion then you cant say its a wrong opinion, simply MY opinion.
Clearly we have different views of what represents a bonsai, no big deal.

Unhappy

Juliet, this is Steve-from-the-frozen-north.

Just wanted to say that I'm happy to find out that I'm not the only one crazy enough (or genius??) to try this technique, too - I saw Dugzbonsai site last spring and decided to have a go myself. I cursed and swore during the process and came up with my own "ugly" trident maple/frankenstein creation. I used a landscape screen mesh thingey as a skeleton for my project, but it was more of just a pyramid without any "movement". After one year's growth, it ain't looking too pretty.

I'll try to post a picture when I get home (surfing at work right now). I'm just hoping the poor thing survived my over-wintering.

peace, Steve

Hi Steve

I'd love to see your creation trident!!.

I will post a picture of voodoo soon, it is fall here so it is now without leaves. The maples havent actually fused yet, they tend to push into the wax instead of growing together (icu all laughing) and yes the wax does melt in the HOT Australian sun. Some of the maples have died over the years too which doesnt help.

I think i should have dropped it into the ground rather that the box i have it in, growth has been slow. I actually dont know why i keep it as it takes up a bit of space, i guess i have more hope and sense.

Cheers

Jls

Juliet (and all) - better late than never - this is my frankenstein/ugly creation after about one year . My growing season is short, so I'm letting it grow unchecked. It'll probably be several years before it looks anything like a real tree , but it was (and still is) an interesting experience.
