Hi Jules,

It might be time to wrap the trunk with some heavy gauge wire. Kind of build a cage out of the wire. That way I think even if you do get some melting wax the wire would hold the basic shape. Looking pretty good actually. Keep us posted.

Took your advice

Ha Ha Earl, very cute tune

Tony, i will give that a go if i see any wax leaking out, but i think a cage of wire would put even more heat next to the tree, we will see.

Matt, i took your advice and spread out the top layer and you were correct (gee, go figure) those inside trees were in need of some light. I hadnt thought what would happen if they died. so here is a new updated pic!!

posibilities

Jls: I know that you are thinking that you created a monster but I am thinking that this may end up being a good monster. The problem is that you will not be able to judge it until it has completed the process of inarching and this can take several years. You are in the first growing season. This project will take on a life of its own in future years if you give it the chance.
The pictures and updates are cool so keep up the good work.

Would this work with other seedlings? Could it work with zelkova or dwarf pomegranate? Or are maples the only species that fuse in this way?

Why not? Technically, it meets the base definition, which is of course a plant in a tray.
