Hey Jules, thanks for posting this. I think the failures are as important as the successes, and it gets everyone thinking about new methods.

Reading your thread has me considering using a brad nailer or maybe a finishing stapler to hold the trunks. I probably wouldn't use wax either. I guess I am not a wax person, but I have some dead stumps I would consider trying to revitalize in this way.

How the stumps got dead is another chapter in the voodoo bonsai genre.

Thanks for your pain in the interest of advancing bonsai science or bonsai voodoo. I have been thinking about adding this thread to the startpage, but can't decide whether it belongs in the

HUMOR category or
HOW (not) TO area?

In any case I won't be surprised if this tree makes a nice bonsai for you at some point in the future, despite the pain. I rate it a five/5 for innovation.

Regards,

Matt

Actually, Jules, I'm sort of impressed.

I think it came out pretty well - a lot better than I expected after reading your initial post! And I wouldn't be surprised if those trees don't fuse quite quickly despite the occasional gaps.

Admittedly, I don't undestand why anyone would want the finished product, assuming that it works - but I completely understand the fun of trying something like this! Thanks for the visual tour. And let us know how it comes along.

Best regards,
Old Mister

Couldnt help your self hey OMC, lol. Well I like the big trunk tridents, hehehe. To each his or her own.

Yes, I agree mistakes are as important and the triumphs, but i would have prefered triumph. At least i know when i have made mistakes...and Matt, I have no problem with this being posted in a how NOT to do something area...

Its amazing what a nights sleep can do for the aches and pains and, well, pin pricks. I went out to look at the tree this morning b4 work and i have nick named the tree UGLY. i will be sure to let you know of ugly's progress.

Cheers

Jules:

I have nothing but the highest admiration for you! Not only did you try but you shared the saga with everyone which says volumes about you (good things of course).

You also have a knack for writing the experience in a most entertaining way. Thank you.

Please post some pictures of the project periodically so we can see the progress.

When i first read about this technique i thought it was neat but was kinda disappointed that you couldnt get the "core" out and have a hollow tree. It seems that you can do that with the wax assuming all goes well. Good going.

PS Jules are you a man or a woman?
It sounds like Jules can go either way but you named yourself Juliet. just curious. i'm not sexist or anything, wait hold on, maybe i am. give me some time and ill get back to you on that one.

thanks guys...

there were at least 2 times when i said to my self..oh give up. I went and sat on ground and stared at my mess, but then i figured i had to finish it or repot the trees and i didnt want to do that, they all hade holes in them!!

I'm the female Jules or Jls, short for Juliet or actually I will answer to just about anything, lol.

Also if you plan to do a hollow core tree i would HIGHLY recommend you take dugzbonsai.com tour number (i think its 3) where he makes his tree over a wire frame. I would do it this way in future, but as i never EVER plan to do it again....

My other 50 trident maple 2 year olds are going into the ground or into groups...and NOT into one tree and i will happily wait for them to put on some size natually

Cheers

Jls

This may seem off the wall....

How about a basket tree. You know, woven like rattan?

Not thinking clearly... must... get... sleep!
