Let me know if you find any-OK?

My brother used to live in a suburb of Kansas City and the city planted some beautiful Zelkovas as street trees in front of his house.

Unfortunately, he moved to Maryland!

Hi Gary, That's a very nice tree. I especially like the defoliated state. You can enjoy this one in winter too.

Is this a Zelkova Serrata? Someone was trying to tell me that they have red leaf stems. Ever seen anything like that on yours? Actually my zelkova have no leaf stem at all, or maybe 1/16th of an inch at most, and they are green.

Hi Tony,

It is nice to look at in the winter.

It is Zelkova serrata.

This one doesn't have red stems or petioles but it is what they refer to as a "Red bud"
Zelkova. When the buds come out in Spring or after defoliation they are a bright red color.

I had some that had the green buds and they were not as vigorous and they were more difficult to train into broom style. They always wanted to shoot out horizontal branches.

I propagate off this tree from cuttings. It's a good stock tree.

Thanks for the info, Gary. I'm pretty sure I've got the serrata also. They are real common here in Oklahoma. You can find them most anywhere the birds fly over.

I just thought I'd post a scan of this Zelkova in the fall. It wasn't at the height of color but I had the camera handy.

Gary
I only wish my zelkovas get that kind of colour. They never do.
Beautiful.

ROBOKU,

The leaves don't decrease in sixe much after defoliation. By Fall they are about the same size as when I defoliate.
My main reason for defoliating is to renew the leaves and get more twigs. By Summer, the leaves that come out in Spring are dark green and very thick and some are torn etc. Defoliation renews them and Iget 2seasons growth and better Fall color.
