I agree about the defoliation Gary. I had a zelkova in a shallow pot once and we had a very hot summer at the time. I accidently let it dry out 4 times over the summer months. I had to remove all the dead crisp leaves. Everytime it came back the leaves were a nice soft light green leaf. But I also found they were smaller. However I don't think you should do this to your trees though.
