bq57:Cutting black pine candles always has a goal behind it. Some of the benifets are shorter needles and shorter internodes. Disadvantages are a slower growing tree and a weaker tree. You will have to find your own balance. I would cut the candles and watch to learn what reaction this causes.

Re: Black Pine canes

Bq,
It is a standard to trim off candles after the needles have fully opened in the summer. This produces a second budding from which you can select new buds.

BUT...
This tree is a baby, that needs some more time. Lots of sun, water and fertilizer, my friend.

Re: Black Pine canes

I think you should just let the tree grow for a while. To let it get strong.

Strip all the needles from within about 1" of any branch union where two or more branches meet. Particularly right at the top center. I am not talking about the older leaves at the base of new candles. I mean that knot of foliage in the center of the tree, and any needles growing near the base of existing branches.

Pines tend to throw out more buds right at these points and stripping needles will help reduce the likelihood that you will get a dozen more branches where you already have two or three.

This will help the plant adapt to having distinct branches as opposed to whorled growth. Eventually, if the plant lived long enough, it would self-prune many of these redundant branches.

Regards,

Matt

Perfect.

You're doing well! now you can see in there and it's beginning to look more like a tree.

Next step is to decide which of those buds should be branches and which should be toast. I can't see the whole tree so this is a little difficult. See that whorl there in the middle where you have two big branches and two little ones? That's a trouble (or opportunity spot) because left to its own devices you would get a bulge there.

But fear not. You have some decisions. Depending on your design goal for the tree at this time, (big trunk or well branched tree) you could:

1) Cut off the big branch on the left and keep one or both of the little buds for the time being and use branch on the right as a new leader

2) Or remove both of the little buds and stick with the larger two branches if you're going for bulk at the expense of ramification.

Regards,

Matt
