PROJECT-Hornbeam
I started with this Korean hornbeam in the bulb pot from El Dorado Bonsai last Sept. It had allready lost most of its leaves and the ones that remained I took off, preparing the tree for fall. I chose this plant due to the great curving trunk it has from soil line to about 7" tall. The original tree was about 14" tall at the start.

You can see the red lines that indicated where I was to chop the little rascal. The root was taken off at the red line but the tree was chopped at the top red line. I decided to take the tree all the way down to my original thought at the lower line. I did the chop in early Feb. The tree started to bud by the end of Feb. I got some buds in all the right places. Whew!! I got a bud at the top of the tree and felt glad about that. I was holding my breath that it would pop where I wanted.

Fast forward to today. The pace for the shohin hornbeam is way ahead of schedule. I had no idea at the speed I would be able to build branches. This thing ramifies almost weekly. At the top of the tree you can see my sacrifice leader. I have allowed this apex leader to grow unhindered, so as to help heal the chop mark on the back and to get some taper in the apex.

This is the apex area as seen from the back of the tree. These branches are about a little thinner than a pencil.

Here you can see the scar of the chop. The margin is rolling over nicely. It will still be 4 or more years before it is completly closed.

This is a view looking straight down on the tree. The branches radiate evenly all the way around the tree. The tree should finish out at about 8" tall. Maybe a little more, but not much. So far this has been a great project. I will let the tree gow one more year , and the place it in its first bonsai pot. When I find my box of pots I will post it here for everyone to see. I have allready bought it , just can't find it.
Best regards, Bonsaial |

Al,
Great minds think alike! Here's a shohin hornbeam that I treated similarly last year. Now it's about 6" tall. And as you say, ramifying weekly. This shot was taken a couple of weeks ago, right after a hard pruning. It realize it shouldn't be in a bonsai pot yet, but I was showing my mother-in-law how to repot, and I figured "why not?" Cheers, Old Mister

Very nice. Similer trees, mine just crooks the other way. ( sounds like Bill Clinton)

Similar indeed, though I think you've got a bit of extra caliper. (Sounds like Clarence Thomas).
