Mallsai Transformed?

From what I've gathered, most of you guys are very experienced with Bonsai, I was just curious as to whether or not you had ever tried to free a tree of its Mallsai stereotype? Have any of you ever converted these trees into something worthy of being called a true Bonsai? If so, I'd love to see pictures.

Both these trees came from Malls. Sorry no before pics.

The Ume was from the Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco. It was growing straight up like a picket I pruned the top and retrained it at a slant.

The ponytail palm came from the Asian Mall in San Jose. Transplanted with a new front, scraped off the white rocks and

Both these specimens were quite a bit more mature than your typical mallsai, but beauty is where you find it.

Matt

I also have a mallsai that I am ressurecting. It is fukien tea that i have had for 4 years and it was also a tad more developed than a normal mallsai. I transplanted it out of the bonsai pot it came in and into a training pot in order to let it grow out a little more and it might remain there for a few more seasons before it is ready to go back into a bonsai pot. Sorry no pics I have none on my work computer and I should be sorting through finacial data anyway.

cheers

Hello Johnsai,

This Chinese elm was sort of mallsai. I bought it from a bonsai wholesaler who distributes "bonsai" to garden centres and High street shops, so technically it didn't come from a mall, but it typifies the mass produced badly potted neglected kind of material that is mallsai.

Before & after pics.

Regards,

TB

Hey Tree Beard,

Did you air layer this? If so how long in between pics?

not bad mallsai material though i've seen much worse. so far these few rescue stories none are the typical mallsai, i supposse the question is has anyone rescued a juniper that had rocks glued on and was little more than a twig coming out of a pot?

Jow, not it wasn't air layered, just repotted and tidied. There is 3 months between pictures.

Regarding "real mallsai", we don't get the juniper-with-glued-rocks type here in the UK (at least I haven't seen any). Most UK mallsai are Chinese Elm, Fukien and Serissa, with a few Ficus here and there. All are probably imported direct from the far east.

Adam, thanks!

Regards,

TB
