Large Foemina Forest
Day one...In preperation of repotting a large foemina forest, the pot will have to be prepared. Today I prepared the large pot. The pot measures 32"x22"x3" and needs to have its drainage hole screened and some sticks mounted to hold all the numerous holdown wires needed when planting forests. The trees are very vigourous and need the wires a short time. They are mostly needed for placement of the trees during the design stages.
The screen I used is more rigid than the standard plastic canvas used for stitchery. This screen is very stiff and rigid and used for latch hook rugs and keeping leaves out of your gutter. The screen is held in place by standard hair pins and the sticks are supported by running additional wires thru the holes and tieing in the sticks and leaving the wires long for addtional tie wires. Tie wires were twisted onto the stick prior to tieing the sticks into the pot. I now have all the wires needed to hold the trees in while they grab hold with their own roots and placing the trees during styling. The angled sticks also hold pairs of wires and are there because the bulk of the main design will be on this end. The trees are larger here and so will need additional support. ...tomorrow...the trees and day two... ak

Look forward to seeing this work in progress. How many junipers? Are they cuttings from the same parent plant?

Well it looks like it is off to a fine start....By that I mean the pot. You neglected to tell us anything about that awesome pot other than the size. I would love to hear more about it, such as where can I get one lol.

This large tray for a forest was purchased a Nee Hai bonsai nursery here in Fresno. The pot is from Royola Pacific. It is from China and is high fired. A pot like this sells for about $350.00.
He has larger pots too!

I started about 8 AM this morning. Still had a dew on the lawn and just a hint of steam on the breath. I started by unpotting the smaller grove. I have had this forest since 1984 and have repotted it about evey three years. It was repotted last year and so the trees were very easy to remove. They were taken apart and pruned for shape and left to soak in a beer cooler bucket while I did the other forest.
The other forest was taken from the pot and the trees were taken from the soil matt. This was very hard as the trees had not been repotted in 6 years. The roots were very compacted and it took nearly 3 hours to get the trees free.

The branches of the larger grove was tremendously overgrown. The foliage was thick and air and sunlight can not reach the inner spaces between the twigs where buds grow. This photo shows a branch tip and growth that is very dense. The second photo shows what a branch looks like after it is pruned back hard. Even with all the growth, I had the beginnings of numerous buds withing the dense foliage. How I don't know.

For the next several hours I pruned and pruned. I filled a large 50 gallon trash container over half full with needle juniper foliage after pruning 13 trees. My wife will kill me if I get any on the ground since our Shihtzu is attracted to it like ducks on a june bug.
I then began placing all the trees in the container. This is the hardest part and yet satisfying if all goes well. After working for another couple hours on the design, I filled it up with soil and tightened all the wires. This is my foemina forest ready for its new spring growth. By April 1st the branches should be filled out and this should look awesome. Cheers, ak
