Kenji Miyata In New England
A couple of weeks ago, NEBG had its Members' Day event that featured their resident artist, Kenji Miyata. He did 2 demos. The first was a collected Redwood, styled in the basic fashion.
#1 Here's Kenji getting into the rough material. Kind regards, Andy Rutledge zone 8, Texas http://www.bunjindesign.com/bonsai/ |

#4 Here's the finished tree. A basic, upright Redwood styling. In the future, this should be a great tree.

Kenji also did a styling of a large ponderosa pine. This one gave him pause and he debated on the design for a while. #1 Here' Kenji gets acquainted with the tree, trying to decide where the front will be. Kind regards, Andy Rutledge zone 8, Texas http://www.bunjindesign.com/bonsai/ |

#2 He did do a bit of carving, but just enough to enhance what was already there. There were sufficient, natural shari and jin that he did not touch.

#3 After deciding on the front, he wired every branche and raffia'd up a few for some major redirection.

#5 The final result was far better looking in person. It was quite deep and the back, lower branch, swung around to make a really nice profile. What was obviously going to be a bunjin became a windswept bunjin - as Kenji decided that the trunk's limited movement suggested this as the most viable option.

Kenji has skills... He will be doing some Demos in New Jersey on April 17 and 18. My birthday is on the 17th so it's kind of my birthday present. It will be a great learning experience.
