Al,
I tried that. The darn thing had thorns and bit me. My age estimation was "Old enough to have thorns" |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME
|
Re: Jim Doyle and Walter Pall style at Gingko 2001
Walter....Wow! I love it. Forgive a question slightly off subject. I read and see many trees that have undergone severe work as demo trees. I think (and please correct me) that these trees would have been better suited to having the work done over a longer period of time. Some of the demo trees were even recently collected, or potted for the first time at the demo. I guess as a novice I am interested in knowing if these trees are likely to do well and if it is OK to take this approach to a tree. Just want to understand!

Re: Jim Doyle and Walter Pall style at Gingko 2001
Jay,
your observations are partially correct. What is done on stage within two hours should often have neen spread over several months. Good demonstrators only work with trees that are healthy enough to withstand this. An experienced bonsai enthusiast can tell beforehand. Very rarely a tree is potted on stage after serious styling anymore. Only one insult per vegetaion period! This means that styling and repotting do not go together. Sometimes what seems to be heavy styling is just pruning. Then repotting is alright. I have not lost a demo tree within the past 7 years. best regards Walter Pall

Re: Jim Doyle and Walter Pall style at Gingko 2001
I have recieved this virtual from Christine Hayward-Schmalernberg. She is a professional painter and interior designer as well as keen and able bonsai enthusiast. One can see that this combination is unbeatable.
I think this is the best virtual that I have ever seen. God job Christine! best regards Walter Pall ![]()

Re: Jim Doyle and Walter Pall style at Gingko 2001
Now I have tried to enhance this by putting it into the correct pot.
The fabulous thing about this virtual is that it is very well possible and the tree shold look like this in about five years. Fun Walter Pall ![]()

I really like your work, and know Jim Doyle personally. He talks very well of you and your skill. I am am member of the Susquehanna Bonsai Club, in Pa, and Jim showed us slides of his an Mary Kay's trip to Europe. Was that you that they visited? I also wanted to say that the pictures were very cool, and I like your work. Thanks for showing it!

Re: Jim Doyle and Walter Pall style at Gingko 2001
Walter,
I loved the tree. I like the fact that you didn't take off more bark. Personally, while I like the more contemporary styles, sometimes all that hits you in the face is alot of white trunk and dead branches. I think too much of that detracts from the tree. You got the balance correct in my humble estimation. |
