Japanese maple cutting
I just recieved a red maple that looks to be nothing more than a rooted cutting. It has buds that have opened up and starting to look like true leaves about half way up the tree and at the Y shaped apex of the tree. One side of the tree is completely void of any buds at all, my question is how would i get her to back bud on this side of the tree? If anyone out there could help this would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.......Adrian

Hi Adrian, By "red maple" do you mean Acer palmatum? A heathy, vigorous Japanese maple with a strong root system will bud back vigorously when pruned hard. It's hard to say for certain without seeing pictures, but the best bet is probably to get this thing strong and healthy, and only then try to get it to bud back. Best regards, Carl |

That process of getting healthy and vigorous would take at least one year in good soil if you're really dealing with a rooted cutting; more likely two years. -Carl |

I want to thank you both, treebay & carl, for your advice reguarding my red maple, yes acer palmatum. I would most likely say it's a cutting there is no branching to it at all, however the open buds are growing like crazy. I know maples are outdoor trees but i live in maine and the weather here has been sunny, but very windy and cold( below 10 degrees) and that's inside my garage. I'm worried that keeping it out there will do more harm than good. I have it indoors now by a sunny east facing window and feed it miracid 30-10-10. like i say it's growing like a weed but should i be doing this? I do plan on putting it out on my deck when frost is no longer a threat. Advice/critics welcome!
