Ground Bonsai

What steps should I do before grounding my bonsai?
Should I prepare the soil? if so, how?

What pest should I be worried about when I field my bonsai? Slugs? snails? Also, What would be a good repellent?

Thanks

It would depend on what the soil looks like where you are planting it. It certainly wouldn't hurt to amend the ground soil, but you may not need to take that step. Personally, I throw my sifted fines into my ground area and mix them in with a shovel.

As for pests, pretty much anything that attacks trees would be a potential pest for your ground growing trees. To repel slugs and snails, an aluminum pie pan filled 1/4" with beer should do the trick. Just check your ground trees frequently and treat as needed.

Hope this helps

Why are you planting this tree? Do you have a picture of it? Are you sure it will benefit from growing in the ground?

When you transfer a potted tree to the ground, there are always risks with bugs and disease that you can't control as well as in the pot environment. Usually plants are put in the ground as pre-bonsai stock and field growing is used to increase the tree's size during its rough development.

Usually with a tree that has already been potted, it is a better plan to use a grow-box (wide, marginally deep container filled with potting mix) to develop branches and heal wounds. This is a more controlled environment and you don't have to worry so much about pests and soil-borned pathogens (virus, nematodes, borers, etc.)

If you return your tree to the ground, it will grow more aggressively, but you are likely to lose some of the fine root pad development that helped adapt it to container life, and you are more at nature's mercy.

Regards,

Matt
