Club Meeting- Unwrapping A Present
Friday night was the night I would unwrap the trident I had started a few months back. To read the thread of how the procedure was done go here:
PROJECT: Trident Maple III The night started out with Harold Mitchell doing his presentation on air layerings. he brought in a couple of large trees that he layered off of a large tree in his yard. The trunks were very interesting, and I wish I had a photo of the other on since it was really sharp. Harold holds up the tree he took off. Mind you, he cut these off with out even knowing if they had roots or not, dedicated to the meeting that evening I say!!

Uncovering the moss end rewarded us with a set of roots indeed. I don't know how well they will show in this pic. Unfortunatly, the tree had produced most of its roots on one side of the plant.

When Harold was done with his presentation, I took my plant out and started to unveil it. I was totally shocked. The tree had produced roots all the way around the trunk. They were about a foot long, and as large as a pencil lead or thicker. I was very happy.
This is the ugly stump that was left.

This is the new tree with very good layered roots. I severed the top off about 1 1/4" below the root ring. All the roots came out within a 1/2" of the copper wire that I had put around the trunk.

I potted the tree in the large plastic bonsai pot that the trident maple I bought at Kim's came in. I placed a large amount of 3/8" lava stone in the bottom and put a mound of bonsai soil in. The tree was placed in this by shoving the stump end in the soil to the roots. The roots were distributed around the plant and it was covered with soil.

I tied a piece of wire around the pot, and tied guy wires to the tree to keep it firm in the pot. I don't want it to move till the roots are very active and firm the plant up by themselves.
The branches look all dorky and the plant looks mishapen, but the planting angle is wrong, and I want to get the plant strong before I decide what I want to do with it. I may still take the apex out as a shohin, I havn't decided yet. Maybe a couple more years.

Other activities last night included the repotting of this huge Blue Atlas Cedar grove. The pot is 38" long and the trees are about 45" tall.

Al, you come in with the most amazing stuff! When I retired, I considered moving to the Fresno area. Well, actually Modesto. Looks like there was alot more to recommend Central California than I reallized. I have a daughter that lives in Fresno. When I'm able to visit her, I hope I'll be able to meet you and Glen and perhaps make it out to one of your club meetings.
