Chronicle Of Creating A Bonsai Tree – And A Soccer Match (Not Bonsai Related)

Day 0 – Bargain hunting.

I decided to look for a Juniper, a sure thing.
I visited the largest Juniper nursery in Israel, they have a few thousands trees in their fields and a few hundreds in their shop, of course it is not a pre bonsai nursery.
After two hours (and bleeding hands) I had found nothing!

Day 1 – continuing bargain hunting

While driving back form a business meeting, I had noticed an old neglected nursery with a sign "Mature Trees for Sale".
I had stooped there while browsing, I had found many treasures the best of them was a very old Olive tree (what else…).
I asked the old guy there for the price, preparing my self for few hundreds NIS, well he asked for 50 NIS= $10.50!
I could bargain but I paid him the 50 NIS, I felt sorry for the old guy, it seems his business was very slow, if at all.

Now about Olive trees in Israel – by law you must preserve mature trees even if they are in your own property.
So if you are building or changing the landscape you have to dig them out and transfer them, usually people sale them to landscape gardeners and nurseries.
My new tree was not grown form a seed at that nursery, it is a very old tree which had been grown somewhere else, as its trunk was broken it was left neglected waiting for me…

Day 2 – Beginning shaping – Game 1 (Not bonsai related)

Next day I arrived home early for two reasons, my new tree and a soccer game.

First I had began working on my tree, I had cut the rim of the container cleaned the soil and the trunk and then I began to prune the branches, I had stop working as I had no suitable pot.
In Israel there are no Bonsai suppliers or nurseries.
We have to import privately or buy abroad or improvise for all our bonsai supply.

At evening I had phoned few of my friends looking for a pot,
I had no luck.

Soccer Game 1 (Not bonsai related) – I had continued looking for a pot while watching the soccer game.
The soccer game was between Makabi Haifa (Israel) and Manchester United (England). Manchester is one of the beast soccer clubs in the world (if not the beast).
Suddenly Makabi had scored the first goal, all the neighbors around (and me too) where shutting so load that I was afraid that they will defoliate all my bonsai trees.
And than was the second goal and then the third, at the end of the game Makabi defeated Manchester 3:0 and still I have no pot!

Day 3 – Repotting

I did not find suitable bonsai pot, I decided to use a plastic training pot, as a matter of fact it is not such a bad idea to pot it for a year in a training pot.
I made it from a 40cm – 16" gardening pot which I had cut, lower and enlarge the drainage holes
I had cut the pot of the tree and took it out, and began to clean and trim the roots. And than a surprise, under the trunk was a strange woody bump. I had sawed the bump and paste it with cut paste.
Then I had trimmed the edge of the cuts and the roots and sprinkle rooting hormone #8 powder for woody roots, and than I had potted the tree into the new training pot.
The rooting powder always reminds me of the "Electricity Powder" we used to ask the new technicians in the air force to sign for, and I believe it helps the same…

I did not make much of a shaping, I had cut some more leaves, wired one off the trunks bending it inside and separated the other two trunks with a piece of wood.
I had left some branches with leaves to encourage the root growing.

Day 4 – Finding a Pot – Game 2 (Not bonsai related)

In the morning we had the bonsai club meeting and maybe I had found a pot, I will collect it in the evening before the soccer game.
I collected the pot, it is the right size 56cmm – 22" by 36cm – 14", I would prefer different color but I have not much of a choice. Anyhow for now I will live the tree in the training pot.

Soccer Game 2 (Not bonsai related) - today the soccer game is between Makabi Haifa (which defeated Manchester United) and Bayttar Jerusalem which is my youth club.
Bayttar is in a very bad position in the Israeli league and lost all her last games. The other day a sport journalist promised in the radio that if Bayttar wins he will dye yellow all the hair of his body, emphasizing "all".
And now I can cut and paste from Game 1 changing Makabi with Bayttar and Manchester with Makabi, and more!

Bayttar defeated Makabi 4:0!!!

Pleas bear in mind that English is not my mother tongue and that jokes sounds much better in Hebrew…

To be continued...
