Chinese Elm Repot

Hi All.

I repotted the Chinese Elm featured in this thread over the weekend.

The pot is the one mentioned here.

The soil is the mix talked about here, with a little top dressing of the B&Q ready mixed (here...). I used some of the ready mixed to top dress purely for the look of it.

Here is the final result:

I am pretty happy with the result, I was able to cover up the nasty chopped roots, although I completely forgot to do as Bnsaijim and Erubeck said here about nicking and hormoning. I was going to cut some off the bottom of the rootpad and try to repot much lower into the old green pot, but it wasn't possible in one repot. Lucky I'd been out before hand and acquired another pot, just in case...

The new pot is a tad too deep, but since I hadn't been able to make my mind up about a 'proper' pot, I was actually going to pot into a mica one for now but ended up with the one you see before you.

Here is the nebari now:

I did some preliminary carving of the old chop scars, I still need to hollow out this one some more. The reddish stuff round the edge is my homemade cut-paste. See the 'before' pic here.

This is the preliminary work on the other scars. I'm not sure whether to run them both together into one, or leave them seperate. The lower one does not drain at the moment, I'll need to look at that very soon. Should be ok for a while, the tree is resting in the potting shed for now.

Finally here is a shot from the old front (the new right hand side). This shot shows up the bow branch I mentioned in the other thread. I'm undecided about losing it at the moment. Get a look at my puny growbed in the background.

When I pruned the canopy (thank you Ripsgreentree for the advice) I tried to open it out more than it was. I pruned hard back into old wood, and took out lots of crossing, intertwining twigs and branches. There is still more work to do, but that can wait.

Comments, suggestions etc etc are as always most welcome.

Kind Regards,

Chris - TB

TB,

I'm biting my tongue... ;^)

Oh well, hopefully you'll get a few years use out of it before it splits.
