You will see a vast difference between the styles of my trees and Asus's. He is sick of me saying cut it back, it is too rangy, chop that off, get rid of that hideous branch.

I will be putting this tree in a box after wiring and letting it get some thickness. Will post the final pics tonight or tomorrow and ask for some critques. (got Ausu to post as I couldn't be bothered resizing on my puter)

ok gg lets have a chat it looks like you are having a ball there, thats great.

but seeing the whole grow box thing has been brought up and your not potting into a bonsai pot, you need to know this.

this is something we have all done in the beginning, that is taking off the bottom branches.

i cannot stress enough how important the bottom branches are in the long term. try to leave them on your trees especially when you are growing on. think about working down the tree rather than up the tree.

they serve 2 extremely important functions
*1 to thicken the base of the trunk
*2 a better future option as the tree, still supple for bending and twisting ( some exceptions)

i hope this helps.

Yes, once I took them off I went Doh, should have kept them as sacrifical branches, the trunks are worse than I thought! I am getting back into bonsai after a large number of years, and finding out how much has chaged and how much I have forgotten! I am not so concerned with this tree, I just need the practice and it was a cheapie that won't matter if it sits for years in a grow box. Don't worry, there will be lots of Doh oops moments, I am so forgetful these days.

I am also trying to get into the habit of documenting, even these ordinary trees as I sometimes don't bother and regret it.
