Took off some wire and reapplied new wire. bent some branches around and pinched for new growth in the spring. Mostly just a tidying up of old branches.

The stub has been carved back and I tried to make the stub as natural as possible. A little fire never hurts here. Cleaned up the deadwood and oiled up the live veins to show some contrast. It seems to be doing well and next year should give me better choices for crown structure.

Very nice Al, this was indeed a great transformation from collection to styling.

I love the look of the deadwood in 43363 especially.

Well I said I would have some new choices for a crown after the foliage had started to fill in. With the new fertilizer I started last year and the explosive growth I have had this year with the stuff, I can now see a definate crown starting to develop.

...but...with a 3/4 view from the left side, the trunk now shows great taper, great branching, great live veins, and the trunk diving into the soil looks better. My only negative thought is the first branch emerging from a pocket. I would rather have this in a better place, though I can live with it.

The tree is due for pinching this weekend in preperation for the second spring due early next month.

Looks like you have a winner there with the new angle; I would not hesitate to prune the foliage that's in the way of the trunk if the tree were mine

For what it's worth, I like the foliage in front of the trunk. I think it adds depth to the tree.

Hey, great new angle. I too would lose the foliage in front of the trunk, looks like you have a couple of good candidates to be back branches, will give you the depth you need and more maturity, and I believe relieve some of the impact of the "pocket" effect. I think the most important thing that I have learned from Marco during his time at the Nursery the past few years is the importance of appropriately scaled back branches for depth- my principal argument against 360 degree viewing requirement for bonsai. When you get the back branches right, the composition is tremendous. Very, very nice work. John
