Bonsai Northwest Monthly Meeting
Just thought I'd show you a couple of pictures from our clubs meeting last night. Brad Smith, President of the club, was the demonstrator last night and did a nice job on a mugo pine. We used a video camera plugged into a TV to show close up detail of the work that was going on. I got stuck with the camera work which wasn't too bad at all.
Have a look at:www.bonsainorthwest.com.au for more details and photos. This is the tree before work. It was a bushy shrub to start with. |

You mention that you have 80+ members. It would be interesting to know what your meetings consist of. We meet to work on our trees once a month (at members gardens) and have a problem when more than 12 members attend. Particularly with the different levels of understanding. We spend more time answering questions from beginners than working on trees.

Meeting Format
One of the things that the Clubs in California are trying to do this year is to have an hour of Bonsai Basics befor the general meeting. We are using this program to bring newbies up to speed. The general meeting is attended by everyone and the topics are better understood by the new members. It is also our hope that the workshops presented by the club will be better attended by the newer members. If your club meeting consists of work shops in members gardens, deligate one member to guide the members who did not bring trees and explain what is going on and answer questions. Have another gather every one who is working on basic material and lead them through repotting and growing techniques. The advanced members are then free to do the work that was entended. I will say that if your club is comprised of only working on trees in members back yards, there is a world of activities out there that you are missing. Our club does several shows a year and several fundraisers, workshops fieldtrips and the ocasional dinner. The shows and fundraisers open us up to the public and this contact brings in our new members.

Glenn has given you great information about clubs and exposure. Our club will be celebrating its 30th year in existance from humble beginings. It started with a handful of members and has grown substantiall in the last 4-5 years. It has come down to exposure. We have a website that has been around for 5 years or so and has brought in quite a few people. Our club shows is what bring in a lot of people and where the majority come from. We have monthly meetings which alternate between a workshop night and a demonstration night. This is proving to be very succesful. Keep your club going and growing by exposing it a bit more. Find some local nureries and put up ads there to start with. Good luck. David |
