I think that you could shorten the apex, and flatten it out...I think it looks too pointed to convey the image of a mature tree.
Furthermore, add more movement to the middle portion of the trunk, but keep the apex where it is, although the branches are correctly angled for a sankan, the shape of the trunk still makes it look a bit like a tree that has been 'planted on a slant' because of that first curve, and the fact that the first, largest branch appears to be on the wrong side. The trunk may be too thick already for this, perhaps it may look better by removing even more of the upper foliege, as the second picture shows. Why not post some different angles of it, to get some more options and ideas? I've always admired this tree, and wish you the best of luck with it.

Getting good with those virts...
![]() The original still gets my vote though. Imho, it looks more natural. O.k that low branch is just a bit thick and lacking in movement, but I'd still opt to try and refine it instead of just losing it. Alternatively, build a similar tree, by bringing down and growing out the branch right above it, if possible. I like that tree, rather fine pot as well.

I like this tree. I'm not exactly sure which I like better, so I think I would say the original.

Having just spent a few days hiking in the Smokey Mountains, I opt for the first. It looks awfully reminiscent of some trees I saw in nature.

I am with Gringo, lower the tree as he suggested.

Still at level 1

I'm with Gringo. However I would go even farther. The taper seems to stop above the first branch.
