ripsgreentree: I thought so. I will probably try out some airlayering next year. Because I think this summer is already too short for the roots to develop fully? Or is it?

airlayer

Yes but you can use the rest of your growing season to summer prune your future airlayers and get a real jump on creating your bonsai.

catlin elm airlayering results

This is an example of what I was talking about. As you can see with this catlin elm I have cut the crown several times to make it bush up and fill in. When I felt that the shank of the limb had acheaved the size that I wanted I set up the airlayer. This cutting technique also has another advantage in that there are many limbs growing and pushing roots so this will make your airlayer more succesful.

Here is a close up of the roots and nebari. The little stub to the side is the old limb, you can see how much the nebari has expanded in only 3 months

This new photograph will show how quickly you can expect a healthy maple that has been defoliated to begin recovery. New foliage means new roots.
