Ponderosa Pine

Hello Walter!

I would like to submit this Ponderosa for suggestions. I imagine that the suggestions are going to be extreme, for my eyes see this tree going in a whole different direction than shown.

The tree was collected five years ago in the Black Hills of South Dakota (I believe). It is currently not in the state shown in the photo. The rock has been removed, and it has been needle plucked (long needles are gone). The trunk where the rock supported the tree does not touch the rim of the pot but is just above it now.

There are obvious problems. The "base" looks weak and unable to support the tree. Do you think it would be wise to restyle this tree and bringing it perhaps deeper into a pot and tilt it up slightly?

Or how bout I just sit back and read what your suggestions will be. Thank you in advance for your time in all that you do here at BonsaiTalk.

Paul

Paul,
this will look very unprobable to you. I can assure you that it is not.
The fourty degree tilt to the right is possible with the crescent pot holding the roots as they are. You will have to fix the tree with strong copper wire so that it can stand alone without the help of a rock. It IS possible.
The most unlikely thing to most insiders will be the treatment of the crown. Ponderosa bonsai just don't look like this - IN GENERAL.
See the two attached ponderosas form my collection. They looked a bit like your's a few years ago.

Best regards
Walter Pall
