ATM Large Chinese Elm

Walter,

Here is my large (3-4 feet high) chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia). I recently aquired it but feel that the tree could be a lot better with a some more work. I'm not sure what you think about the exposted-root style (Ne Agari), should I change it so that these are removed or do you think it would ruin the character?

top cat,

why would you acquire a tree that has exposed roots as main feature and then get rid of them?
I have to admit that exposed roots are not exyctly my thing. But let's see what we can do.
The crown, I think could well be a big crown of a deciduous tree. The pot should not be a classical Japanese pot since this is not at all a classical Japanese bonsai. The Chinese pots with the drawings and Chinese writing on them are not exactly my thing either.
Anyhow, I tried to find an unusual pot which supports the ovrall look of the tree.
All this should well be possible within five years.
Now I start to like these exposed roots.

Walter, thank you very much for your comments and your lovely visual. I really like the pot, I think it really suits the tree. I've never been 100% about the exposed roots but thought the tree had other promising aspects.

Here is a very quick virtual that I made before you replied, I was just playing around with some ideas, this eliminates the exposed roots. However, after seeing your visual I'm starting to, once again, see the elegance of the Ne Agari style.

top cat,

nice virtual. Certainly another possiblity. But then it becomes another 'normal' bonsai.

Thank you Walter for your help and time in producing the virtual. I was thinking that the the trunkline might be a little better if when I repot the tree, I turn it a clockwise so that the apex is a little more over the base?

Sounds fine to me. I cannot judge from the pictures that I see. But finding the best front often means playing around a little bit.
