Hinoki Cypress

Hello Walter,

I am submitting this Hinoki Cypress for your critique. It is about 3 years in training from an ugly piece of nursery stock. Unfortunately there was not much left to work with but i would appreciate any sugestions that you have for improvement.

Thanks,
Reed

Reed,

if I owned the tree I would plant it into the garden and let it grow for a minimum of five years. Cut back new grwoth a bit in the beginning and a bit more later. Then take it out of the ground, put it into a pot and develop a bonsai from then MUCH better material. Then, after 10 years or so submit it for critique.
In the meanwhile go to a nusery and get yourself MUCH better material to spend your precious time with.
sounds cynical, but is my best honest advice.
Why so harsh? Because somebody got to tell you.
If one has an honest job one gets from 10 to 50 US$ or much more per hour of work. How much time will you spend on a bonsai over the years? 10 hours? 100 hours? Multiply it by your cost per hour. Then you have a price to pay for decent material which is worth your precious time.

best regards

Hi Walter,

That is pretty much along the lines of what I was originally thinking. I got the tree for free from a friend who was cleaning out his stock. It had only 4 branches but for some reason I had a vision in my head of what I thought could look pretty nice. Maybe it was the 1 1/2" trunk on a Hinoki that I just couldnt bear to give up on. Unfortunately like many ideas I couldnt quite get this to look as I had envisioned. I have been quite unsatisfied with the result and was planning to just put it in the ground and let it grow when I saw this and thought maybe you could see something that I had missed. However as is usually the case, poor stock makes poor bonsai. Thank you for your honesty. I will put it in the ground as you suggested and we'll see what happens.

Thanks,
Reed
